Utah Sweeps Double Header over Utah State and Idaho State

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team grabbed back-to-back 4-0 sweeps in a double header on Friday. First, the Utes defeated the Utah State Aggies before beating the Idaho State Bengals, moving Utah's record to 4-2.Â
The Utes were led by Emma Kamper who came away from the day with a 4-0 record. She started strong against the Aggies with a 6-3 doubles win, then claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win in singles. In the afternoon slate, Kamper found success with another 6-3 doubles win and a 6-0, 6-1 victory in singles over the Bengals.Â
UTAH STATE
The Utes grabbed an early jump in doubles action against the Aggies. Sara Akid and Emma Valletta were the first to finish on the No. 1 court and topped Indya Nespor and Cielo Tapia-Cruz 6-1. Emma Kamper and Hayley Roberts then defeated Olivia Halvorsen and Kylee Sperry 6-3 on the second court, securing the doubles advantage for Utah.
Samantha Horwood and Dylan Lolofie were tied 4-4 in the No. 3 spot when the doubles point was clinched and the match was left unfinished.
In singles, Valletta claimed the first Ute victory on the No. 4 court, defeating Maria Ramos Garcia 6-1, 6-2. Kamper then followed suit in the No. 1 spot, posting a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Nespor. Kaila Barksdale clinched the match victory for the Utes on the No. 3 court, topping Ana Sabikova 6-2, 6-4.
The remaining Utes each took their matches into third sets when the match was clinched. Akid dropped her first set 7-5 and responded with a 6-1 victory. She was ahead 4-3 in her third set before it went unfinished. Lolofie claimed a second-set 6-3 win, forcing a third where she led 2-0 before going unfinished.Â
Roberts grabbed a 6-2 victory during set two, and was winning in the final set 1-0 before it was left unfinished.Â
IDAHO STATE
The Utes displayed strength against the Bengals in doubles. Kamper and Roberts secured the first Utah victory over Sydney Morris and Millie Day in the No. 2 spot with a 6-3 score. Horwood and Lolofie then defeated Victoria Grymalska and Olivia Mikkelson 6-3 on the No. 3 court, securing the doubles point for the Utes.Â
After trailing 5-1 early in the match, Akid and Valletta battled through a closely contested tiebreak, and claimed a 7-6 (4) victory over Stefanya Shalakhova and Asem Shoyek on court No. 1.Â
Utah kept the momentum going into singles action. On court one, Kamper topped Shoybek 6-0, 6-1. Roberts then defeated Veronika Zarovna 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot. Akid clinched the match victory on the second court, beating Shalakhova 6-1, 6-4.
Barksdale held a strong 6-0, 4-0 lead on the No. 3 court before her match went unfinished. The remaining two courts also went unfinished.Â
NEXT UP
Utah will next take on Memphis at home on Feb. 11 before they hit the road to San Diego to face San Diego State on Feb. 14 and UC San Diego Feb. 16.
