LAST TIME OUT
The Utah women's tennis team secured back-to-back 4-0 sweeps over Utah State and Idaho State (Feb. 7), improving their record to 4-2. Against the Aggies, the Utes claimed the doubles point with wins from Akid/Valletta (6-1) and Kamper/Roberts (6-3). In singles, Valletta (6-1, 6-2), Kamper (6-0, 6-1), and Barksdale (6-2, 6-4) clinched the match, while three other Utes led in third sets when play was halted.
Against Idaho State, Kamper/Roberts (6-3) and Horwood/Lolofie (6-3) secured the doubles point, while Akid/Valletta battled back for a 7-6 (4) tiebreak win. In singles, Kamper (6-0, 6-1), Roberts (6-1, 6-0), and Akid (6-1, 6-4) sealed the victory. Barksdale was up 6-0, 4-0 before the match went unfinished.
THE UTES
Utah women's tennis enters the 2025 spring season with a roster featuring a core group of returning players blended with new talent. Returning to the team are sophomores Sara Akid and
Emma Kamper, junior
Kaila Barksdale, and senior
Samantha Horwood, all of whom contributed significantly during the 2024 season. Joining the squad this season are two transfers in
Dylan Lolofie, a Salt Lake City native from Weber State, and
Emma Valletta from Ravena, Italy, previously at VCU. This spring, the team additionally welcomed freshman
Hayley Roberts from Bradenton, Florida.
HEAD COACH RUTHANN ALLEN
The Utah women's tennis team welcomed Ruth Ann Allen as head coach this season. A Utah native and a Utah All-American and Hall of Famer, Allen returns to lead the program after a successful tenure as head coach at Weber State. She guided the Wildcats to a Big Sky Championship in 2023 and was twice named Big Sky Coach of the Year (2022, 2023).
Before Weber State, Allen spent 20 seasons as an assistant coach at Utah, where she helped the Utes secure multiple NCAA Tournament bids, two Mountain West Conference titles, and numerous top-five regional rankings. Allen, an All-American during her playing career at Utah, was inducted into the Utah Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2023.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis heads into the match with a 1-6 record on the season. The Tigers dropped their last three matches to Xavier, Purdue, and Mississippi State. Utah currently holds a 3-1 edge over Memphis through their four-match history. During their last contest at the ITA Kickoff in January, the Utes dropped to the Tigers 5-2.
