PARK CITY, Utah and MINTURN, Colo. – The Utah Ski Team had a split race day on Saturday, as the alpine team raced on home snow in a giant slalom qualifier while a smaller group from the Nordic team competed in a 7.5K classic as part of the Denver Invitational.
Today's GS was hosted by the Utes at the Spencer F. Eccles Olympic Mountain Center at the Utah Olympic Park. As a qualifier race, team scores were not kept but individual results for the athletes count for NCAA qualification purposes.
Alpine Recap
Timmermann and Herland Ski to GS Podium
Claire Timmermann posted top-five runs in both the morning and afternoon to ultimately finish third for the day with a total time of 2:07.49.
Kaja Norbye and
Evelina Fredricsson went 7-8, separated by just five-hundredths of a second in the final results. And
Melanie Dahlberg put down a 10
th place result, ensuring Utah had four finishers all in the top-10.
Three Utah men placed in the top-10.
Johs Braathen Herland took bronze (2:03.81) helped by a top-three opening run, while
Sindre Myklebust (2:03.98) finished fourth despite winning the first run.
Simen Strand was 10
th (2:04.94).
"The women's team was amazing today," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "The hill was not easy. Claire had a podium and Evelina skied so much better. Melanie was 11
th and had her best GS finish of her career. Kaja is always charging in there. The guys are such a fast group; any one of them can win on a given day. It was a little tough on the second run with the conditions. But it was still a podium for Johs and almost for Sindre."
Two more Utes placed in the men's top-25 in
Wilhelm Normannseth (21
st) and
Oliver Parazette (25
th).
Johnson added, "People came out today and it was fun. Working with the Utah Olympic Park and the folks here, everything is starting to come together. Just being here on our home mountain close to campus is amazing."
Nordic Recap
Lavén Wins Again, First Career Podium for Jayne
The Nordic Utes are shorthanded this weekend with several team members in Europe for the U23 and Junior World Championships. Nevertheless,
Erica Lavén won her fifth straight race while
Zachary Jayne skied to his first podium as a Ute with a second-place result.
"It was a great day today with our small team in Minturn!" said director of skiing
Fredrik Landstedt. "Considering (the small group), everyone came together and performed exceptionally. Having all of our skiers finish in the top-seven was outstanding. Zach and
Carl Rune both chose to double pole the entire race, as did Johannes Flaaten who won the race for Colorado. Erica also double poled, as did the entire women's podium.
Celine Mayer and
Selma Nevin skied with kick wax and looked great out there."
Mayer was sixth in the final results (26:16.0) with Nevin right behind her in seventh (26:41.9). In addition to Jayne's podium on the men's side,
Carl Rune placed fourth.
Utah is second in the meet standings with 476 points. Colorado is in the lead with 564 points, an 88-point difference. Denver is in third (454.5). Both the men's and women's race fields were small today with just 24 athletes racing in the men's competition and 25 in the women's event.
