SCOUTING THE WEEKEND COMPETITION
- Saint Mary's and Utah are no strangers, having met in each of the past two seasons, with the Gaels taking the 2023 meeting, followed by a victory for the Utes in 2024. Saint Mary's most recent weekend of action took them to Honolulu where they grabbed two wins on day one, including a conference conquest of San Francisco. However, three straight losses to end the tournament dropped the Gaels to just a single game over .500.
- Stanford enters the weekend ranked No. 5 in the nation with three triumphs over ranked squads, one of which came at the expense of then-No. 1 USC. Their toughest tandem so far in 2025 has been Kelly Belardi and Avery Jackson, who've gone 9-2 in the third flight for the Cardinal.
- The Islanders have tangled with three ranked foes so far in 2025, nearly knocking off No. 14 Texas. They own a 6-2 mark against unranked opponents, including five straight victories. The Utes will have the chance to avenge a defeat they suffered to the Islanders in March of 2024.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah spent the season's third week in Northridge, Calif., where they posted a 3-1 mark that included two sweeps of Santa Clara. The pairings of
Bella Vezzani and
Langley Griffin at No. 2 and
Ellyn Collins and
Kylie Pitzak in the No. 3 spot continued their run of excellent play, winning all four of their matches in Northridge. So far in 2025, both tandems have been defeated only once, with Griffin and Vezzani claiming a victory over the No. 2 pairing from 17th-ranked FIU and Collins and Pitzak taking the third flight when Utah took on No. 12 FAU. Pitzak and Vezzani will also be arriving in Stanford with a couple milestones on the horizon. Pitzak needs only two more victories to reach 50 in her career, while Vezzani is only four triumphs away from that same benchmark.
BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS
- Despite a loss in Utah's first match at CSUN, Quincy Stephens and Katie McAlister have gotten off to a successful start in the No. 1 spot, accumulating a record of 9-3. Three of those wins came after the opponent took the opening set and Stephens and McAlister are a perfect 3-0 in matches that reach a third frame.
- As a team, the Utes are 12-4 in three-set bouts so far in 2025.
HEAD COACH BRENDA WHICKER
Coach Whicker enters her ninth season at the helm of Utah beach volleyball. She is coming off the winningest season in program history finishing with a record of 19-16, with a first-round Pac-12 Tournament victory over Oregon. So far in 2025, she has coached Utah to one of their most successful starts in program history, starting with a 6-2 record. Her Utah squad got to compete against two ranked opponents over the FIU Weekend tournament. Both ended in losses but valuable experience against the upper echelon of NCAA Women's Beach Volleyball was gained, along with two crucial pair wins. Whicker was a volleyball player at Utah under current volleyball head coach Beth Launiere from 1994-97. She holds the record for most aces in Utah volleyball history and is one of six players in Utah volleyball history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career while playing for Utah.
UTAH BEACH CLASSIC
Utah's lone home competitions are set for March 28-29, when the Utes host the fourth edition of the Utah Beach Classic. This year, UC Davis, Boise State, Oregon and Big 12 opponent Arizona will join Utah for the weekend in Salt Lake City. The Utes will host at the Lassonde Sports Court on the Utah campus.
