FULLERTON, Calif. –
Hailey Maestretti fired the first complete game shutout of her collegiate career and
Emily Capobianco and
Reese Lee blasted the first homers of their careers as the University of Utah softball team blanked the No. 23 San Diego State Aztecs, 1-0, then trounced the Cal State Fullerton Titans, 10-2, on Saturday on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, Calif.
These victories improve Utah's 2025 record to 6-14.
"It was a great day for the Utes," said coach
Amy Hogue. "This group put together a nice day and I'm proud of the wins they earned. It's hard to win games. There are so many pieces you have to put together and they put those pieces together twice in a row and got a couple victories."
Utah vs. San Diego State
A classic pitcher's duel unfolded between Maestretti and SDSU's Cece Cerulla. Neither hurler blinked through the first six innings, holding each side scoreless. The Aztecs loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but a Maestretti strikeout squashed that opportunity.
Maestretti worked out of another bases-loaded jam in the third, then proceeded to strand a runner in scoring position in the fourth. The Utes put a runner on second in the fifth, but were unable to bring her around.
It wasn't until the seventh that Utah broke the tie. A single and an error put runners on first and third with nobody out. Cerulla managed to strike out the next two hitters, but she then uncorked a wild pitch and
Sianni Sakai slid safely into home with the game's first run.
Maestretti then completed her masterpiece by retiring the side in order in the bottom of the stanza. Utah's freshman southpaw permitted only four hits and struck out five over seven innings.
Utah vs. Cal State Fullerton
Capobianco lit the fuse for the Utes against the Titans when she came to bat with bases juiced in the first. She drilled a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam and Utah had a quick 4-0 lead. Fullerton was able to put up a run of their own in the bottom of the first, but Lee answered in the second with a solo shot to right-center that restored her team's four-run edge.
The Titans again put up a run in their half of the frame, but in the third,
Brooklyn Carreon entered the circle for Utah and ended any comeback hopes the home team had. In five innings of relief work, Carreon limited Fullerton to just two hits and collected four strikeouts. She started by retiring seven of the first eight batters she faced and only let one runner reach third as she earned her second win of the season.
While Carreon was throwing up zeroes, Utah's lineup kept tacking on. The Utes loaded the bases again in the fifth and Sakai poked a two-run single through the middle. A wild pitch plate another run moments later to make the score 8-2 and a
Jolie Mayfield RBI triple put the visitors up 9-2 in the sixth.
Kennedy Proctor added the final tally in the seventh, singling in Sakai, and Carreon took care of the rest to complete a two-win evening.
"Maestretti threw a gem in game one," said Hogue, "and game two had a challenging strike zone and I was proud of what Brooklyn did to limit the walks. We drew 10 walks and got some big RBIs, including a couple of firsts with home runs by both Capo and Reese. We're looking forward to playing with some momentum again tomorrow."
