Utes Stage Two Comebacks, But Fall 5-4 in Extras

Utah softball finishes first home weekend with two wins in three tries
SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah softball team erased two deficits, but ultimately fell in extra innings, 5-4, to the Kansas Jayhawks in Big 12 Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah's overall record is now 10-23 and they are 2-4 in conference play.
The Jayhawks broke the ice in the second inning with a September Flanagan RBI single and they upped their lead to 3-0 in the third thanks to a run-scoring hit and an error.
Utah's lineup made its first noise in the bottom of the third, thanks to a Shelbi Ortiz triple and she scored moments later on a wild pitch. One frame later, Kennedy Proctor led off with her second home run of the season and the Utes then used a single and a sacrifice to move the tying run into scoring position. When Hailee White poked a two-out single through the right side soon after, Reese Lee scored to even things at 3-3.
After a scoreless fifth, Kansas re-took the lead thanks to a walk, a double and a two-out error, but another Utah comeback in the seventh erased that deficit as well. A lead-off single by White was followed by another hit two batters later to give the home side runners on first and second with one out. After a lineout, Jolie Mayfield ripped a 1-1 pitch into left field, plating the tying tally and sending the contest to extras.
Unfortunately, the Utes couldn't manufacture the winning run. Kansas broke the tie with a run in the ninth and while Utah did bring up the winning run with one out, the Jayhawks prevented the Utes from drawing level again.
