The First Pitch: Things to Know
An in-state showdown is on deck for the Utah baseball team with the Utes heading down Interstate 15 on Tuesday to face off with Utah Tech. First pitch is at 4 p.m. MT from Bruce Hurst Field and the game will be streamed on WAC International.
- The game on Tuesday continues a stretch of eight in a row that the Utes will play inside the Beehive State. It began this past weekend with the team taking two of three in its series vs. Oklahoma State at Smith's Ballpark. With a rubber game victory for the home club, it went down as Utah's first Big 12 Conference series win.
- The series victory was sparked by a combined shutout on Friday night as Colter McAnelly and Lucas Boeseon held the Cowboys to five hits. McAnelly tied the Utah single-game record with 12 strikeouts in his eight-inning start and was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season.
- Utah and the Trailblazers split a pair of meetings last May with the home team winning both. Down in St. George, Utah Tech won that game by an 11-8 score but the Utes responded in SLC a week later with an 11-4 triumph.
- Now members of the Big 12 Conference, the league is Utah's fifth affiliation since resuming varsity baseball in 1948. Previously, the Utes have played in the Skyline Conference (1948-62), WAC (1963-99), Mountain West (2000-2011) and Pac-12 Conference (2012-24). Since joining the WAC, Utah has won five conference championships, most recently in 2016 as a member of the Pac-12.
- As a team Utah hit .333 last week, the best batting average for the week in the Big 12. In the Oklahoma State series, four Utes hit .400 or above led by Derek Smith's 5-for-11 weekend. Smith hit two home runs to lead the club to an 11-0 win, raising his batting average by 50 points for the season. Core Jackson was .429 on the weekend with two homers of his own.
- Headlining the offense has been Jackson, the two-hole hitter who has hit safely in 16 of Utah's last 17 games. The native of Wyoming, Ontario, boasts a team-best .422 batting average (second in the Big 12) while also owning Utah's top slugging percentage (.656), most runs scored (23), total bases (59) and steals (8).
- The Utah bats have combined for 56 doubles on the season, leading the Big 12. Kaden Carpenter (10) has the most on the team, while Tyler Quinn (8) and Matt Flaharty (7) are close behind.
- Defensively, Gary Henderson's club climbed into the top-19 nationally with a .981 fielding percentage. It ranks third in the Big 12, helped by an error-free weekend against Oklahoma State.
- After the midweek tilt, the Utes will be back home from Friday through Sunday to host a familiar conference foe in Arizona State.
