Utah Battles in 4-3 Loss to Iowa State

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah women's tennis team battled in a 4-3 loss to Iowa State on Saturday afternoon.Â
The Utes were led by Emma Kamper's strong performance as her and partner Hayley Roberts picked up a 6-3 win in doubles and then went on to pick up a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.Â
Utah is now 7-11 overall on the season and sits at 2-7 in Big 12 play.Â
DOUBLES
Utah had a strong start in doubles action with the Utes claiming the doubles point. Sara Akid and Emma Valletta finished first with a 6-3 win over Julia Camblor and Cristina Ramos Sierra at the No. 2 spot. Emma Kamper and Hayley Roberts followed that up with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot.Â
Samantha Horwood and Dylan Lolofie were ahead 4-3 in their match before remaining unfinished.Â
SINGLESÂ
In singles, Iowa State picked up a win at the No. 2 spot to start things off. Kamper got the edge back for the Utes with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win at the No. 1 spot over Iowa State's Julia Camblor.Â
The Cyclones then picked up wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots in the line up to take a 3-2 lead over the Utes.Â
In the No. 3 spot, Kailia Barksdale battled in three sets to tie the match back up at 3-3. After dropping her first set 6-2, Barksdale battled back to win her second set 6-3 and her third set 6-1 defeating Mari Paz Vilar.
The match came down to the No. 5 court where Emma Valletta battled in another three set match. Valletta dropped her first set in a tiebreak 6-7 (5) to Sierra. Valletta then won the second set 6-3 but fell in the third 3-6 to give Iowa State the win.Â
UP NEXT
The Utes will hit the road to Oklahoma State (April 3) and Kansas State (April 5). Utah's final home games will be April 10 against Houston and April 12 against UCF.Â
