POCATELLO, Idaho –
Hailey Maestretti gave up only two earned runs across seven innings and added four strikeouts, but the University of Utah softball team was narrowly defeated by the Washington Huskies, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Black and Orange Classic in Pocatello, Idaho at Miller Ranch Stadium.
The Utes now have seven wins and 18 losses in 2025.
Utah was able to secure an early advantage to Maestretti when, in the bottom of the first,
Sianni Sakai drew a walk,
Kaylah Nelsen dropped a double into left and Sakai scurried home on a fielder's choice.
That advantage held for the first three innings, during which time, the Utes' starting pitcher only faced nine batters and induced a double play grounder to end the second. The Huskies used a homer to tie the game in the fourth and moved in front one frame later, but those were the only blemishes on Maestretti's line. She's now given up two earned runs or fewer in each of her last four starts.
Utah's offense continued putting together opportunities, with a runner reaching third in three of the last four innings, but the Huskies prevented the Utes from pushing another run across.
Up Next
The Utes will finish their time in Idaho on Monday, when they'll take on Idaho State in a doubleheader that will begin at 12:30 p.m.
