SALT LAKE CITY – Seniors
Shelbi Ortiz,
Kaylah Nelsen and
Kendall Lundberg combined for five hits, three RBIs and scored three runs and the University of Utah softball team came from behind twice to earn a 7-6 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah improves to 13-36 for the season and 5-16 in conference play.
The afternoon began with three scoreless innings, as Utah's
Hailey Maestretti and ISU's Abby Huhn matches zeroes. In the fourth inning, the Utes became the first team to break through, thanks to an error, a sacrifice and a
Sianni Sakai RBI double.
The Cyclones quickly answered with two runs of their own, but Utah then made its first comeback of the day. A single and a walk brought
Emily Capobianco up and she laid into a 2-2 pitch, sending it over the wall in left-center for a three-run homer. This blast also represented Capobianco's fifth go-ahead long ball of the season, the most on the team.
After the top of the sixth, the home team found itself behind again thanks to a two-out rally by ISU that plated three runs and moved them back ahead, 5-4, but the Utes found a way to respond again.
Hailee White started the uprising with a single, was moved to second by a bunt, and
Reese Lee followed with a bunt hit to bring
Shelbi Ortiz to the plate. Utah's senior left fielder laced the first pitch she saw off the wall in center for a go-ahead, two-run triple and that was followed by another clutch hit from another senior,
Kaylah Nelsen, who made the score 7-5 by lining a run-scoring hit into left.
Maestetti took care of the rest to lock down the win. Despite allowing a lead-off double, she retired the next three hitters in order to bring Utah's Senior Day to an triumphant end.
