HOUSTON – The Utah baseball team was defeated by Houston 10-4 in the teams' series finale on Sunday at Schroeder Park.
Tyler Quinn doubled and scored as part of a 2-for-3 day, while
Cameron Gurney tripled for the second time in as many games.
Core Jackson homered in the eighth inning for his team-leading 10
th long ball of the season.
Trailing by a run after three innings, Utah scored a pair in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Quinn's double to left center gave the Utes a runner in scoring position with one out; Gurney followed with a triple into the left field corner that leveled the score at one.
Drake Digiorno was the next batter and he sent a grounder to third. On the ensuing throw home, Gurney did a nice job to slide around the tag safely as the call stood after an official video review.
Digiorno stole second and reached third on a wild pitch later in the inning, but would be stranded there.
Unfortunately for the Utes, Houston posted crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-2 lead. The Cougars put up three runs on four hits in the fourth inning before adding a four-spot with three hits in the home half of the fifth.
A two-out error by Houston allowed the Utes to bring in
Jake Long in the seventh inning and Jackson clubbed a leadoff no-doubter to right field in the eighth for Utah's final runs of the ballgame.
Dylan Gazaway (1-3) contributed four innings in his start, striking out four Cougars.
