Maxwell Award given annually to the outstanding player in college football
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah junior quarterback Devon Dampier has been named to the Maxwell Award Watchlist, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday.
Â
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
Â
Dampier is set to enter his first season with the Utes in 2025. The Phoenix, Arizona native began his career at New Mexico where he played in 21 total games in 2023-24 with 13 starts. He became the first UNM quarterback to earn All-Mountain West First Team honors in 2024. Dampier led the conference in total offense by piling up 3,934 yards, including 2,768 passing yards, the league's second-highest total.
Â
Dampier ranked third in the MWC with 1,166 yards rushing and averaged a league-best 7.52 yards per carry. His 19 touchdowns were the second-most in the conference and he became the first Lobo QB to ever eclipse 1,000 yards rushing as he rushed for 100 yards in a game six times in 2024.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on November 11, while the three finalists will be unveiled on November 25. The winner of the 89th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 11.
