Utah holds nation’s No. 2 ranked offense to season-low in yardage
The Utes (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) trailed 10-3 entering the fourth quarter and pulled within three with just over 10 minutes left to play, but the Red Raiders (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) scored three unanswered touchdowns to pull away late.
Utah's defense held Texas Tech, which entered Saturday as the nation's No. 2-ranked offense averaging 602.7 yards per game, to season lows in both passing yards (311) and total offense (484), but the Utes were also held to their lowest offensive totals so far this season.
Nate Ritchie led the Utah defense with 13 tackles and 2.5 TFL - both of which marked career highs - to go along with a pass breakup, while Johnathan Hall added a career-high 10 stops. Jackson Bennee and Tao Johnson both logged interceptions, contributing seven and six tackles, respectively.
John Henry Daley, who entered the day as the nation's leader in sacks, added one more to his tally and now sits at 6.0 on the season. Daley is the first Ute with six sacks through the first four games of a season since 2005.
The Utes posted 263 yards of total offense on the day but were held back by four turnovers. The Utes managed 101 yards on the ground, the first team to eclipse the century mark against the Red Raiders this season.
Devon Dampier completed 25-of-38 passes for 162 yards at the helm of the Utah offense. His 25 completions marked a new season high, but he also threw his first two interceptions of his Utah career.
Ryan Davis led the Utah receiver room with 10 catches for 70 yards and has tallied 10-plus receptions in back-to-back games, the first Ute to do so since Paris Warren in 2004. Dallen Bentley also tallied career highs in receptions (6) and receiving yards (75), helped by a career-long 44-yard catch-and-run that set up the Utes' lone touchdown of the day.
NaQuari Rogers rushed 10 times for a team-high 37 yards on the day, while Wayshawn Parker tallied six carries for 22 yards and a touchdown.
