GEORGETOWN, Colo. –
Johs Braathen Herland won his second slalom in as many days as the Utah Ski Team was back at Loveland Ski Area on Tuesday for races, this time as part of the Colorado Invitational.
The back-to-back comes as the alpine portion of both the Denver Invitational and Colorado Invitational go down this week. Monday's slalom was also at Loveland, but was scored as part of the DU meet—in which Utah currently sits third place.
For the Colorado Invitational, Utah is also in third place with 147 points after Tuesday's races. The Utes are 33 points back from the host Buffaloes (180) and Denver is in second place with 173 points.
"It was a really good bounce back day," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson "The girls skied a lot better today. Melanie was top-three on the second run, Maisie was seventh and Christina was eighth on the second run. So that was fun to see. On the men's side Johs is rolling. There was some good skiing on that men's side—wow.
"Melanie did what she did all Fall and just sent it (on the second run). That's the speed we've seen in her and we're very happy with that. We're ready for some GS here. We'll get ourselves settled in at Aspen, do a short recovery, get some sleep and get ready for tomorrow!"
Women's Race
It was indeed a nice bounce back day on the women's side for Utah, which was led in Tuesday's slalom by
Christina Jacobsen with a top-10 finish (1:32.01).
Melanie Dahlberg had a solid second run to land 13
th in the final results (1:32.13) and
Kaila Lafreniere wrapped up the Utes' scoring in 16
th place (1:32.35).
The Utah lineup also included
Maisie Blyth in 19
th place and
Maddie Kaiserman in 24
th.
Dahlberg's second run brought her up six spots from her initial standing; it was a top-three second run as she clocked 44.93 seconds. Blyth and Jacobsen also were in the top-eight for their respective second runs.
Men's Race
Utah followed a great men's showing on Monday with a performance Tuesday that landed three athletes in the top-nine.
Johs Braathen Herland put down a time of 1:25.12 for the victory, which included a third-place first run and a top-four run in the afternoon.
Pierick Charest was seventh (1:26.43) and earned key points in just his second college race while
Harry Hoffman took the ninth-place spot (1:26.56).
Sindre Myklebust narrowly missed the top-10 and took 11
th while
Jay Poulter was 18
th for the Utes.
Poulter climbed up eight spots from his initial run after sitting 26
