WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CALIF. — The No.19-ranked Utah golf team played hard on Day 1 of the Southwestern Invitational, securing fifth place with a team score of 4-over 284 through the tournament's first 18 holes of action.
Sergio Jimenez led Utah with the team's lowest individual round, a 3-under 67 that secured the junior from Spain a tied for second finish in the day one standings.
Jimenez settled in after a two-bogey start with five birdies in his final 13 holes, including a 3-under back-nine that saw the Ute soar up the leaderboard.
Brandon Robison ended the day as Utah's second-best finisher with an opening round even-par 70. Robison, a four-year player for the Utes, put together a clean opening nine before carding a 36 (even) on the back to take a share of 15th-place.
Davis Johnson and
Gabriel Palacios rounded out Utah's four-player scoring group with rounds of 3-over 73 and 4-over 74, respectively. Johnson gained poise after a messy front-nine, carding a 34 (2-under) on the back to finish the day in a tie for 39th. Palacios, Utah's highest-seeded player, finished his afternoon with a birdie on the 18
th to place T42.
Jack Jerge finished his first round as a Ute with a final score of 7-over 77 tied for 61st.
Finally,
Ivan Enguita, playing as an individual for Utah, had an impressive day—earning a share of 15th after an even-par 70 opening round.
All in all, Utah's scoring group settled in after shooting a combined 7-over 143 on the front nine. Notably, after taking some time to learn the course, the Utes' four lowest scorers shot a combined 3-under on the back.
Going into day two, Jimenez sits two strokes behind the clubhouse leader, UNLV's Trevor Lewis, who shot 5-under 65. As a team, the Utes are 11 strokes behind their host, the Pepperdine Waves, who lead the tournament at 7-under.

LOOKING AHEAD
After the Southwestern, Utah heads to Honolulu, Hawaii, to take part in the John Burns Intercollegiate, Feb. 12–14. The Utes will have to find another time to relax on the beach as the team aims to defend its 2025 victory at the event. Meanwhile, Palacios looks to defend his individual crown after shooting 15-under 198 in the 2025 edition of the John Burns.
