RENO, Nev. – A day after
Melanie Dahlberg skied to her first collegiate podium, the Utah junior found the top spot in the women's slalom while
Johs Braathen Herland won the men's event on the opening day of the Nevada Invitational at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe.
Christina Jacobsen scored her first podium with a silver medal in the women's race.
Utah won both the men's (76) and women's (94) races today and leads the standings of Nevada's alpine-only invitational. The Utes totaled 170 points as a team, giving them a 28-point lead over Denver which is in second place. A giant slalom day will conclude the meet on Tuesday.
"We had a good team meeting after yesterday's races and we came back today and skied with some intention," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "Melanie has been really fun to watch and Christina is skiing like we know she can. That was such a good day for them. We have the speed, sometimes you've got to see it through the uprights a couple times. I think we're on our way to building off of that. Maisie worries about herself when she skis and she worries about the team when she's not skiing; it's pretty fun to see that. Johs felt good today and there were great conditions for the first run. His skiing IQ shows in the stability in his skiing. He's able to adjust his speed sort of how Mikkel Solbakken could a couple years ago. It's a very rare thing to be able to do that, especially in slalom."
Men's Race
Johs Braathen Herland won the day's opening run with a time of 46.15 seconds and took the victory when all was said and done (1:37.97) as Herland won his fifth race in six starts this season. It was his seventh triumph over Herland's two seasons at Utah.
Sindre Myklebust (1:40.63) and
Harry Hoffman (1:40.87) provided key points for Utah with 12
th and 14
th place finishes, respectively, as Utah racked up a race-leading 76 points to win the men's event.
Women's Race
Melanie Dahlberg totaled a 1:44.28 across her two runs to secure her first individual victory at Utah. Her result was helped by a top-two opening run that Dahlberg clocked at 50.68 seconds.
Christina Jacobsen (1:44.96) finished second on the day after starting the race as the 16
th athlete out of the starting gate.
It was a similar story for
Maisie Blyth, who was the 29
th racer to start but skied to a top-14 result (1:47.30).
Kaila Lafreniere (17
th) and
Maddie Kaiserman (23
rd) also raced for Utah on the women's side.
