SANTA CLARA, Calif. –
Hailey Maestretti and
Raci Miranda combined to allow just three hits over 10 1/3 innings and the University of Utah softball team put up another two-win day, besting the California Golden Bears, 7-2, followed by a 3-0 defeat of the Santa Clara Broncos on Friday afternoon at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Utes have now won three straight and their 2026 record stands at 6-1.
"It's really nice to win games while we learn how to put together a solid game on both sides," said coach
Amy Hogue. "[
Emily Capobianco] helped us capitalize on the early mistakes by Cal. Putting those three runs up in the first inning with two outs to start the weekend was huge.
"Raci was excellent in her role to close. She got ahead of most everyone and didn't give Cal a chance to get anything going."
Utah vs. California
The Utes wasted no time seizing the initiative, patiently loading the bases on two walks and a hit batter. That brought
Emily Capobianco to the plate and she ripped a three-run single into left for a lead the Utes would never relinquish.
Shelbee Jones started the day in the circle for Utah and put up zeroes in the first two frames, including a 1-2-3 second. The Bears crept to within 3-2 in the third, but Utah's lineup quickly supplied an answer.
Three straight singles got the top of the fourth started and the third straight safety came courtesy of
Sianni Sakai and plated
Jolie Mayfield to make the score 4-2.
Hailee White then doubled in a run,
Kennedy Proctor lifted a sacrifice fly to center and
Mia Gomez poked an RBI single into right, stretching the Utes' lead to five.
Miranda relieved Jones in the bottom of the fourth and made sure that edge was never threatened. She struck out the first batter she faced to strand two in the fourth and permitted just a single hit over the last three frames to notch her first win of the season. Miranda also struck out two, didn't walk a batter and stranded two in the sixth to squash Cal's last scoring opportunity of the game.
Utah vs. Santa Clara
Maestretti was simply masterful for seven innings. She allowed only two hits, didn't walk a batter, struck out six and faced just three batters over the minimum. The sophomore southpaw retired the first six batters she faced, then used a pair of strikeouts to work around a lead-off single in the first. Maestretti induced a double play ball to help her get out of the fourth, worked a perfect fifth, then stranded runners in the final two stanzas and fired back-to-back punchouts in the seventh to complete her masterpiece.
This was Maestretti's second career complete game shutout. The first came on March 1, 2025 against No. 23 San Diego State.
"Game two was one of the best games I've seen [Maestretti] throw," said Hogue. "She had everything working. Jolie had a phenomenal game on defense and sparked us by scoring after a well-earned walk on [Danika]'s shot to the right field wall. I'd also like to mention Mia [Gomez]. She continues to get big hits for us in each game. She's been instrumental in every one of our wins this season."
Offensively, the Utes scratched out single runs in three straight innings to give their starter all the support she needed.
In the second, Mayfield drew a two-out walk and motored all the way home from first when
Danika Wilson dropped a double into the right field corner.
Mia Gomez boosted the advantage to 2-0 with her first collegiate homer in the third and when Mayfield plated Sakai with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly, the visitors has more than enough run-support for Maestretti, who made sure the lead stood up.
