PARK CITY, Utah –
Melanie Dahlberg and
Johs Braathen Herland each took silver as the Utah Ski Team opened up the alpine portion of its home meet with giant slalom events on Sunday from the Spencer F. Eccles Olympic Mountain Center at the Utah Olympic Park.
Utah's scoring for the day came in the top-11 both in the women's and men's races. The Utes finished second in the team scoring for both GS events and just four points separated the home squad from a win in the women's competition.
"The snow was so good for the entire field," said head alpine coach
JJ Johnson. "We had a good training block here after the Nevada races. Having the crew back and Pierick back from Europe has been really nice. The skiing here today was probably the best I've seen on this hill since we've been back training. It paid off and they came out and raced today."
Conditions on Sunday were great for racing with hard snow and a bluebird day serving as a backdrop.
For the overall meet, Utah is in second place with 504 points. Colorado (556) is in the lead and Denver (405) rounds out the top three.
Women's Race
Melanie Dahlberg was in fourth place after her opening run and finished on the podium with a silver medal time of 2:00.34.
Kaila Lafreniere contributed a season-best eighth-place result (2:04.48) and
Maisie Blyth took 11
th (2:02.39).
Maddie Kaiserman placed 16
th as well.
It was Dahlberg's third podium of the season. Blyth used a top-four second run to climb up from her initial standing of 20
th place at the midday flip to her 11
th place final result.
Men's Race
Johs Braathen Herland skied to the podium for the eighth time in nine collegiate starts this season as Herland (1:57.49) was just six-hundredths of a second from the top spot.
Returning to the collegiate racing circuit,
Pierick Charest placed eighth (1:59.39) and
Harry Hoffman narrowly missed the top-10 in finishing 11
th (1:59.58).
It was Charest's second top-10 of the season.
