ST. GEORGE, Utah –
Mia Gomez homered twice,
Raci Miranda and
Hailey Maestretti earned wins in the circle and Utah softball head coach
Amy Hogue recorded wins No. 500 and 501 in her Utah coaching career as the University of Utah softball team downed the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 4-3, and the Weber State Wildcats, 9-1, on Thursday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field in St. George Utah.
This accomplishment puts Hogue in the company of former Utah gymnastics coach Greg Mardsen, former Utah women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott and recently retired Utah volleyball coach Beth Launiere as coaches who've surpassed 500 wins during their time at the U.
On the season, these two triumphs boosted Utah's record to 13-5.
"Raci and [Hailey] Maestretti each had good outings," said Hogue. "The defense behind them continues to get better all the time. It was important to start the weekend with some early runs, so getting four in the first inning of the first game made me very happy.
"This team is plenty capable of putting up a dozen runs on teams, so I'm looking forward to having them break out this weekend."
Utah vs. Southern Utah
Utah's offense came to life early in their first game of the day, as they strung together six first inning singles that led to four runs.
Payton Crank and
Kayla Lyon drove in the first two runs and an
Emily Capobianco base hit through the middle tallied two more for a 4-0 lead.
That lead was entrusted to Miranda and she was up to the task of holding it. Through the first five innings, she allowed just two singles and recorded 13 of 15 outs on the infield. She would depart after 6 2/3 innings on her way to a win that bumped her 2026 record to 4-0.
The Thunderbirds plated one run in the sixth, then mounted a final comeback attempt in the seventh, when they collected four hits to score twice more. Maestretti put an end to the inning and the game when she induced a ground ball for a fielder's choice that secured her second save of the year.
Utah vs. Weber State
Utah's offense took center stage against the Wildcats, starting with a five-run, third-inning outburst. Gomez got things started with her first long ball of the day, a three-run clout to left-center. After Weber State got the second out of the inning, Lyon and
Danika Wilson added to the lead with solo shots, Lyon's a rocket down the left field line and Wilson's a drive to right-center for her first collegiate dinger.
After the Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the third, an RBI double courtesy of
Hailee White and a run-scoring single off the bat of Proctor boosted the lead to 7-1. That's when Gomez struck the day's final blow, launching an opposite-field four-bagger to make the score 9-1.
That was plenty of run support for Maestretti, who improved to 4-1 by permitting only a single run on four hits. Maestretti also didn't walk a batter, struck out four and retired the final six batters she faced.
