ST. GEORGE, Utah –
Hailey Maestretti and
Raci Miranda both threw complete-game shutouts and the University of Utah softball team cruised to two more victories, blanking the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 4-0, and the Utah State Aggies, 11-0, on Saturday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field in St. George, Utah.
The Utes are now 16-5, their best 21-game start since they were 17-4 in 2023, and their streak of three straight shutouts is their first since they also put up three straight zeroes on March 4 – 6, 2023.
Utah's defeat of SUU also goes into the books as the 700th victory in the head coaching career of
Amy Hogue. This comes just two days after she notched her 500th triumph as head coach at Utah.
"The middle and bottom of our lineup came alive today," said coach
Amy Hogue. "Overall, we were efficient on both sides of the ball, which paid off with two wins today."
Utah vs. Southern Utah
For all seven innings, Maestretti was in control, firing her second two-hitter of the season. She started the day by retiring the first nine batters she faced and not allowing a ball to be hit out of the infield during that stretch. Lead-off singles in the fourth and fifth were the only safeties Maestretti permitted and she also walked just one while striking out four. Of the 21 outs she recorded, 15 came on ground balls in the infield.
Utah's offense made the first mark on the scoreboard in the second, when
Shonty Passi lifted a two-run homer over the wall in left. Passi, who also homered on Friday, is the second Ute to homer in consecutive games in 2026.
Danika Wilson, who went deep on Thursday and Friday, was the first.
Kayla Lyon put the finishing touches on the Utes' opener when she dunked a two-run single into center in the fifth and Maestretti took care of the rest.
Utah vs. Utah State
Most of the offensive fireworks against the Aggies came in the second inning, when the Utes exploded for nine runs.
A single and a walk put the first two runners on and
Hailee White poked a hit through the middle to start the scoring. Two bases-loaded walks and a hit by pitch plated three more runs and Wilson slipped a two-run single into center to make the score 6-0. The final haymaker of the inning was thrown by
Emily Capobianco, who sliced a three-run double into right-center to complete the rally.
Wilson added to the margin with a two-run single in the third, but Miranda already had more than enough runs to secure her fifth triumph of the year. She would allow just three hits, all singles, and strike out five without walking a batter. Miranda is the first Utah hurler to begin a season 5-0 since Sarah Ladd went 5-0 during the 2023 campaign.
"It is no surprise to us to see Raci's success," said Hogue. "She has been putting in the work all year. It's been great to see her be rewarded for the time she's invested."
