LOS ANGELES –
Hailee White tied a program record with two triples in one game and
Shelbee Jones and
Hailey Maestretti combined to allow just two earned runs across 11 innings of work as the University of Utah softball team got the 2026 season started with a 9-1 victory over the UC Riverside Highlanders and a 4-3 squeaker at the expense of the LMU Lions on Friday evening at Smith Field in Los Angeles.
Utah vs. UC Riverside
Utah's offense went to work in the second inning, triggered by
Kayla Lyon's first Utah home run, a solo shot to left. A double and a walk then brought up
Payton Crank with two outs and both runners came across when she laced a single into right-center, making the score 3-0.
In the third, the Utes used three straight walks to blow the game open, first plating a run on an error. White added two more to the lead by lacing her first three-bagger of the day into right and when the senior infielder swiped home on a double steal moments later, Utah's advantage stood at 7-0.
In the circle, Jones made sure that lead stood up. Over the first four frames, she didn't let a runner past second and stranded a one-out double in the fourth. Over 4 2/3 innings, Jones allowed only one unearned run on four hits and struck out three.
After UCR got on the board fifth, the Utes answered with a run of their own in the sixth, then another White triple followed by an RBI groundout by Crank finished the scoring.
Raci Miranda got the final seven outs for Utah, giving up just a single hit and not walking a batter.
White is the 12th player in Utah history to record two three-baggers in one game and the first since Abby Dayton on March 20, 2024.
Utah vs. LMU
The visitors used the long ball to get on the board early, starting with a four-bagger from
Kennedy Proctor in the first and, after LMU drew even, Crank reclaimed the lead with solo blast of her own in the second. Crank would end the day with a team-high four RBIs. Utah's lead grew to 4-1 in the fourth, thanks to three walks and an error that tallied a pair.
For 6 1/3 innings, Maestretti made that difference stand up. After LMU pushed across an unearned run in the first, she put up five straight zeroes, facing the minimum in the second, third and fourth. She received some help from her defense as well, as the Utes turned double plays in the first three stanzas and cut down a runner at third to end the third.
In the seventh, the home team tried to mount one last uprising, loading the bases with one out and creeping to within a run thanks to a walk and a hit batter. That was where the comeback ended. Miranda, on in relief, induced a ground ball to White, who turned a 4-3 double play that locked up another Utah triumph.
