The First Pitch: Things to Know
- Utah Baseball christened the new Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark earlier this season, and through seven games, the Utes are 6-1 at their new home. Utah swept a four-game series against Grand Canyon and shut out GCU in the first three games.
- The homestand continued with a series victory to open Big 12 play against the Arizona Wildcats, with both teams scoring exactly 21 runs across the three games.
- In Saturday's contest against Arizona, the Utah pitching staff struck out 17 batters — the most in a game for Utah since March 5, 2022, against CSU Bakersfield. Payton Riske set the tone with a career-high nine strikeouts over five innings. Dylan Gazaway followed in relief and struck out five batters in two innings, also setting a career-high.
- Utah secured the win in the bottom of the 10th inning, earning a 7-6 victory. The tightly-contested series saw each of the first two games go into extra innings. Arizona took the opener with two runs in the 11th inning that went unanswered. Utah responded in Game Two, scoring twice in the bottom of the 10th to even the series. It marked the first time since April 7-8, 2023 (vs. No. 23 UCLA), that Utah played consecutive extra-inning games.
- Cameron Gurney has been a key contributor to Utah's offense this season. The first baseman leads the team in RBIs (19), batting average (.371) and on-base percentage (.500). With just one error on the season (.992 fielding percentage), Gurney has also been highly effective defensively.
- Jake Long enters the series riding a team-best 12-game hitting streak.
- Jet Gilliam delivered the decisive blow in the rubber game against Arizona, lining a 2-2 pitch into left field for a two-run single to seal the walk-off victory, and series win.
