SALT LAKE CITY –
Mia Gomez set a new program record by reaching base in her 34th consecutive game and
Hailey Maestretti tossed seven innings of two-run ball, but the University of Utah softball team came up just short in a 2-1 defeat to the No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Friday evening in Big 12 Conference action at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
This defeat drops Utah to 25-9 and 4-3 in Big 12 competition.
Gomez, who has reached base safely in every game of her collegiate career so far, entered the day tied with Abby Dayton, who reached in 33 straight contests in 2024. It wasn't until Gomez's final at-bat, which came in the seventh inning, that she set the new school best by lining a single into right-center. Her streak is also the longest active mark of any freshman in the nation.
Both pitchers were on their game all day and the matchup started with a pair of scoreless innings. Maestretti and Ruby Meylan both stranded a pair in the second, but OSU broke through in the third thanks to an Amanda Hasler two-run single. Utah got one of those runs back in their half of the third, courtesy of singles by
Hailee White,
Kennedy Proctor and
Kayla Lyon, the last of which plated White to make the score 2-1.
Maestretti stayed sharp on the mound over the final four innings, holding the visitors without a run and not allowing an OSU player to reach third base. She ended the day with two runs allowed on six hits and three strikeouts.
Unfortunately for the Utes, they couldn't find a way to push across the tying tally. In the sixth,
Danika Wilson doubled with White on first, but White was tagged out trying to score. One stanza later, the Utes put runners on first and second with two outs, but Meylan struck out the last hitter of the day to end the home team's final opportunity.
