TEMPE, Ariz. –
Shonty Passi homered twice,
Hailey Maestretti threw her fourth shutout of the season and the University of Utah softball team scored its largest win over a ranked team in program history, hammering the No. 21/No. 22 Arizona State Sun Devils 15-0 on Saturday afternoon at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
The Utes are now on their first 10-game win streak since they reeled off 11 straight in 2023. They are also 20-5 on the season and 2-0 in Big 12 play.
Utah's offensive eruption started in the second, when they hung a nine-spot on the scoreboard. Two walks and a single loaded the bases and, with one out,
Reese Lee ripped a double into right that plated the day's first two runs. After a walk re-loaded the bases,
Kennedy Proctor doubled in two more and
Kayla Lyon collected two more RBIs moments later with a single through the middle. The capper came from Passi, who hit a moonshot over the wall in left-center for a three-run homer and a 9-0 lead.
In the third, the Utes kept their foot on the gas, using an error and a walk to plate the first run of the stanza, followed by a
Mia Gomez sacrifice fly to push Lee across. Proctor then doubled and later came around on a Passi single. In the fourth, Gomez struck one more blow, going yard to dead center with a runner on to make the score 14-0 and Passi added her second dinger of the day with a solo tater in the fifth. Passi's five RBIs on the day represented a new career-high.
In the circle, Maestretti was just as dominant as Utah's offense while improving to 7-1. She didn't give up a hit through the first three innings, struck out two in the first and worked around lead-off baserunners in three different innings. Maestretti ended the day having allowed only a single hit and she lowered her ERA for the season to 1.48.
