SALT LAKE CITY –
Payton Crank homered and drove in five runs and
Mia Gomez and
Kennedy Proctor both launched their 10th long balls of the season to help propel the University of Utah softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Montana Grizzlies by scores of 7-3 and 7-0 on Wednesday evening at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Utah's 2026 record now stands at 29-15-1.
Game One
The Utes found themselves behind early in the opener, thanks to a top of the second inning in which the Grizzlies strung together four hits and tallied three runs, but the deficit didn't last long.
In Utah's half of the second,
Kayla Lyon was hit by a pitch,
Hailee White singled and
Mia Gomez clobbered 1-0 pitch to right for a game-tying three-run homer. That represented Gomez's 10th home run of the season, making her the fifth freshman in program history to reach double-digits in that statistic. She joined a list that includes Melissa Stahnke, Kara Foster, Karlie Davison and Whitney Holm.
That rally that won the game came in the bottom of the fourth, which began with a single and a pair of walks. With two outs,
Cian Noli lined a two-run single into the left field corner and Crank followed with a two RBI knock of her own, giving the home team a 7-3 lead they'd never relinquish.
Hailey Maestretti took it from there for the Utes to earn her 10th win of the season. Following Montana's three-run outburst, Maestretti limited the guests to just two hits and didn't let a runner reach third base. She would go the distance for her 10th complete game of the season.
Game Two
The stellar pitching continued for Utah in game two, with
Shelbee Jones earning the start and holding the visitors scoreless through the first 3 2/3 innings. Jones recorded six of her 11 outs via strikeout and held Montana to just two knocks.
Meanwhile, the Utah offense went to work in the second inning and it was Crank who started the scoring. After a Noli single, Crank roped an RBI double down the left field line. Two batters later,
Shonty Passi doubled in Crank and the Utes had an early 2-0 edge.
Crank's fourth RBI of the day came on another run-scoring double in the third and a Gomez single plated
Sianni Sakai in the fourth. Utah then added a power surge in the fifth, starting with Proctor's 10th big fly of the season, a two-run rocket to left. Crank applied the finished touch with a solo shot moments later.
Raci Miranda, who earned the victory, did the rest in the circle. She scooped up the last 10 outs while allowing one hit, not walking a batter and striking out six.
