WACO, Texas – Despite a sparkling pitching performance from
Hailey Maestretti, the University of Utah softball team ended up on the short end of a 3-2 nail-biter against the Baylor Bears on Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference action at Getterman Stadium in Waco, Texas.
The Utes are now 30-17-1 in 2026 and 6-11-1 in the Big 12.
This contest was pitcher's duel all the way, as Maestretti and Baylor's Peyton Tanner spent much of the day matching zeroes. Both hurlers started the day with two scoreless innings.
In the third, the Utes broke the ice when
Danika Wilson lofted a two-run homer over the wall in right, her seventh of the season. In the bottom of the stanza, the Bears answered thanks to an Amber Toven RBI single and they had a chance to even the score when they moved a runner to third with less than two outs. Maestretti escaped the jam, however, getting Leah Cran to bounce into a double play, keeping Utah's slim edge intact.
Maestretti breezed through the fourth and fifth innings, then worked around a pair of hits in the sixth to reach the final frame. In that final inning, the first two hitters were retired before a Gianna Gusman single kept the game alive. Maestretti then struck out Brooklyn Carter on a ball in the dirt, but a throwing error allowed her to reach. Two more miscues on the final play of the game sent Gusman and Carter across with the runs that won the game for Baylor.
Despite suffering the loss, Maestretti ended the day with a stat line that included just one earned run and three hits allowed and a career-high eight strikeouts. She also pocketed her 11th complete game of the season and lowered her ERA to 2.45, both of which put her in the top 10 in the Big 12.
