The First Pitch: Things to Know
- With the regular season in the books, the Big 12 Tournament journey begins for No. 10-seeded Utah on Tuesday night, facing No. 11-seed Kansas State inside Surprise Stadium--the spring training home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers.
- Utah finished the regular season with a 26-24 record and a 12-18 mark in Big 12 Conference play. It was highlighted by home cookin' for the Utes in the inaugural season of America First Ballpark; Gary Henderson's squad had a 16-8 record when playing on campus in Salt Lake City.
- The Utes also played in some tight games down the stretch of the season; seven losses in conference play were decided by two or fewer runs. It included one game apiece against eventual Big 12 regular season champion Kansas and No. 3 seed Arizona State.
- The Utes had a memorable series win over K-State in Salt Lake City over March 27-29. Though the Wildcats came away with the series opener, Utah grinded out a pair of victories on Saturday and Sunday, capped off both days by eighth-inning comebacks. Over the two wins, Utah combined for 11 eighth inning runs.
- The rubber match saw Jake Long hit for the cycle, becoming the third Utah Ute all-time to accomplish the feat and first since 2005. Long was 5-for-6 that day with two home runs,
- Utah had five hitters finish the regular season batting .300 or better, led by Long (.369). The Utes' team batting average of .308 ranked third in the Big 12, 24th in the country and is currently on pace for the team's highest since the 2008 club finished with a .323 clip.
- The Utah defense has turned a Big 12-leading 51 double plays this season, a tally that ranks seventh nationally. It is also one away from entering the top-six in program history for a single season.
- The regular season wrapped up with a heartbreaker for Utah this past Saturday. Despite taking a 5-0 lead in the first inning and building a 7-1 advantage after four, the Baylor bats heated up down the stretch as the Bears rallied to take the rubber match by an 11-10 score.
