On Sedrick Barefield and David Collette …
Well I think that with coming back you’re always going to be a little rusty, whether that be with your free throws or you in game stamina. Dave got a couple quick fouls and didn’t get a chance to blow out all of the valves. Two dynamic players, one of our better post players in Dave, and then Sedrick give you a dynamic look. Having a couple guys like that, offensively I think we were able to hold ourselves more accountable.
On transition defense and offense …
It’s been a weekly emphasis, defensive transition I think that we were stunned pretty good. While in Xavier I think we gave up a little too much. Between Lorenzo, Sedrick, and JoJo, I think that we have some guys in the back court that have some quickness and that can put some heat on the defense. We did a good job rebounding, we had a sizeable advantage that allowed us to get out on the break. As long as we aren’t building bad habits and not boxing out, I think that our transition game will continue to improve the rest of the season.
On Sedrick and Dave waiting for this moment with coming back…
I think that’s a better question to ask them, but there is no doubt that I bet they were pretty excited. We didn’t find out till later in the day yesterday that everything had gone through the registrar’s office and these guys would be able to play. It’s been a long time since they’ve been in that type of action, they might say they weren’t nervous or anxious but I was involved in some conversation with the both of them yesterday, so I knew what they were going through. I think it was nice for them to get back on the court and get that going, I think its also very good timing for Hawaii. There will be three games in four days, with those two being back we will have more depth and weapons for this tournament.
Sophomore Guard Sedrick Barefield
On coming back …
Man we’ve been waiting a long time. It was definitely worth the wait. Just getting out there in a different setting, other than practice, and competing against a different team was really cool.
On preparing for the game this week ...
By the way David was practicing I could tell that he was ready. I was a little anxious and over thinking I think. But my teammate Beau just told me to be myself and that really helped.
On his performance…
I think that I can compare it to a rollercoaster, with all of the ups and downs there has been in the past year. But once the ball goes up, it’s just basketball.
Junior Forward David Collette
On his performance ...
I’ve been through the whole thing before, but I was still a little nervous and anxious before the start of the game.
On being named a captain …
It was a big honor. I didn’t really see that one coming, so I’m grateful for that. Being the oldest guy on the team I know a lot of guys look up to me, so it’s an honor.

On playing Utah …
I’d say it’s a combination of [offense and defense]. They shoot a really, really high percentage, and all their guys can shoot. They don’t’ have weaknesses in offense. They can drive it. Utah, in the past, has been a really skilled basketball team, and now they’ve added some athleticism, which makes them really, really tough. But I think it’s a combination of defense and offense, how they find the open man, how they get the ball on the inside, and if they can’t score, they get it back out, their ball-screen offense is really good. They just get the basketball where it’s supposed to be. They’re a well-oiled machine, and I can tell that they spend a lot of time working in practice and working with one another, so they deserve a lot of credit, I tip my hat to them, they’re a really, really solid basketball team.
On learning from the game …
It’s really just more about us and how we try to execute. We got two non-conference games before conference, so a lot of these games ought to prepare us for conference. Utah is by far the best team we’ve faced this season. And we’ve faced Wisconsin, we’ve faced St. Mary’s, two really good teams, but I think the way they played today, they’d get my nod as the best team we’ve faced this year, they’re really good, well coached. We’re just trying to mix up defenses a little bit, just get some different looks. We’ve got a lot of new guys in our program, and we’re trying to try some different combinations, see how some guys play together.
On Collette and Barefield’s Utah debut …
They’re just two really, really good players that you have to prepare for. I think they’re going to be a really tough team in the Pac-12. Obviously, the Pac-12’s going to be good with Arizona, UCLA, Colorado, Arizona State’s much improved, but I’ll be shocked if Utah’s not right there in the mix and having a chance to contend. They’re a really fabulous basketball team. I would have enjoyed it more if I had been watching at home instead of being on the other end of this crushing defeats, but you appreciate really good basketball and you try to get better. There are some things that we need to improve upon to get ready for the meat of our season.
On Zachary Hamilton’s performance e…
Hamilton is being a lot more patient, kind of picking up his blocks and picking up holds and things like that. So I think Hamilton is being a little bit more patient and not being so gung-ho. Now obviously, we got down today, we needed some scoring because Daquan, one of our other really, really good scorers, kind of had an off day today, but Hamilton has really improved a lot, being patient, getting better on defense and rebounding the ball a lot better, so his play has not been a pleasant surprise, we’ve challenged him in the offseason, he has to do that, but he’s really answered the call, and we’re really pleased with his effort right now.
On looking to the rest of the season …
We challenge our guys. I think we’re going to have a renewed spirit because of games like today and games like St. Mary’s. We improved in some areas that need to be improved on. I think our guys are pretty fresh. We’ve got a lot of like-sized guys that can step up there and play. Any given night, it could be someone else on our basketball club that can step up and give us a good night. I think this is really good preparation for us.
