PARK CITY, UTAH - At the 2000 NCAA Ski Championships, the host University of Utah Ski Team is in seventh place after a tough day on the giant slalom hill. Eastern region champion Vermont is in first, followed by Colorado in second and Middlebury in third.
Vermont established its lead early in the day, by means of Matthew Knittle and Brandon Dyksterhouse placing first and second in the giant slalom. Utah's top finisher was Scott Woodland who finished fifth overall. The Utes' team score was hurt by Jernej Bukovec's crash on his second run. Bukovec was Utah's fastest skier in his first run, scoring the seventh quickest time. Jed Scheutze was the Utes' third competitor, and placed fifteenth.
Similar fortunes greeted the Utah women's alpine team as Liz Sherry, who had the third fastest first run, did not finish her second. The Utes' top finisher was Sabrina Lawrence, who notched twelfth place. Colorado dominated the women's slalom, securing the top two finishes. Aimee Noel Hartley successfully defended her 1999 giant slalom championship by finishing more than one second ahead of teammate Linda Wikstrom. Wikstrom finished third in last year's race. Annik Boulva was the third Utah competitor, and placed 17th.
The championships continue on Thursday with the men's and women's freestyle races. The women's 5km race begins at 9:00 while the men's 10km starts at 10:00. For complete results of all nordic and alpine competitions, log on to www.bart.chipco.com.
