PARK CITY - The University of Utah Ski Team improved its position and moved into fourth place on Friday. Denver surged into the lead after, overcoming a disappointing first day in slalom to move up from seventh place. On Friday, the Pioneers took advantage of Colorado mishaps in the women's slalom as all three of Colorado's skiers fell or missed gates. Despite the misfortunes, the Buffs still held on to second place in the overall team competition yet trail Denver by 37 points. Vermont, the team leader after day one, has slipped into third.
Cecilie Hagen Larsen was victorious in the women's slalom race, scoring high points for Denver. She edged out Dartmouth star, Gusty Swift who trailed Larsen's winning time by .24 seconds. Utah's top finisher was Sabrina Lawrence who placed fifth. Annik Boulva turned in a 19th place finish for the Utes and Liz Sherry, who fell on her first run, placed 31st.
In the men's slalom race, Colorado's Andy Leroy won the race by an astounding 1.54 second margin. Utah's Jernej Bukovec scored the Utes' best result of the week placing second. Denver owned the third and fourth positions as David Viele and Christian Hutter finished next. Utah's freshman, Jed Schuetze finished 18th and despite a severe sickness, Scott Woodland managed to finish both of his runs and earned 21st.
The NCAA Ski Championships wrap up on Saturday with the men's 20km and the women's 15km classic cross country races at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah.
