MIDWAY, Utah - The University of Utah Ski Team held on to fourth place on the final day of the NCAA Ski Championships, holding off surging New Mexico by four points. Denver won the team championship by an unprecedented 99 point margin over second place Colorado. Vermont finished 37 points ahead of Utah to earn third.
The last day of racing featured the men's 20km and the women's 15km classic technique cross country races. Denver's men's nordic team skied away with its second 1-2-3, podium sweep of the week, a feet which has never been accomplished by one school in championship competition. Pietro Broggini was crowned the men's champion for the second time with his six second victory over teammate Wolf Wallendorf, who place third in Thursday's freestyle skate race. Rob Whitney was the Utes' top finisher, equal his fourth place finish that he turned in on Thursday. Petter Svendsen also cracked the top-10 for Utah, taking seventh, and freshman Torin Koos earned 18th.
In the women's race, New Mexico's Kristina Strandberg came back in the last leg of the final lap to win the 15km race, and edge out Denver's Britta Wienand for the individual championship. Utah's women were further back as Marika Engstrom, Lene Pedersen and Kristina Joder finished 19th, 20th and 24th respectively.
