SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's offense opened the door for No. 8 ranked Brigham Young early and the Cougars literally ran through it in a 37-17 win before an overflow crowd of 35,378 in Rice Stadium. The Utes managed just four first-quarter yards and turned the ball over on their own 29-yard line just minutes into the game.
The Cougars, who departed from their normal passing game and rushed for a whopping 376 yards and four touchdowns, did even more damage defensively. Ute quarterback Mike Fouts completed just 14 of 34 pass attempts for 179 yards, including minus two yards in the horrendous first quarter.
Despite their offensive woes, the Utes trailed by just 13 going into the second quarter, thanks to a determined defense that allowed just one touchdown and two field goals.
Star running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, who missed the previous three games following knee surgery, rushed for 87 yards and Utah's first TD of the game. Utah made a run in the fourth quarter, when Kevin Dyson caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Fouts to narrow the gap to 30-17. The final Y. score came with 3:24 remaining, ending Utah's comeback attempt.
