SALT LAKE CITY - Cold, wet conditions slowed Utah's passing game, but the best defensive showing of the year and another big day by running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala propelled Utah to a 21-7 win over Texas Christian. Utah won its sixth game in a row, despite holding the ball for a mere 18:24 and compiling a season-low 13 first downs. Fuamatu-Ma'afala made those minutes count, rumbling for 182 yards and two long touchdowns.
Defensively, Utah held TCU to 229 yards and a single touchdown--its best effort of the year. The TCU touchdown came after the Horned Frogs recovered a fumble deep in Utah territory in the first quarter. TCU did not score the rest of the game. On the flip side, Utah's offense sputtered, but made the big plays. Fuamatu-Ma'afala broke loose for scoring runs of 70 and 52 yards--the former a career-best. Utah's first two touchdowns (the first of which was a 41-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Dyson from Mike Fouts) were scored in a mere 20 seconds.
Fuamatu-Ma'afala averaged a whopping 9.1 yards per carry in his fourth-straight 100-yard game of the season. His fourth straight triple-digit game tied a school record. Armand Boglin sparked Utah's defense with two sacks--including a game-clinching, 11-yard sack with 3:28 remaining.
