COMMUNITY SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS (as of March 31)
Since July 1, 2022, student-athletes have logged 816 hours into HelperHelper (this number will increase by the end of the academic year).
Ute Academy Leadership Program: 21 student-athletes participated in a nine-week leadership program, which ended in a 7-day service expedition in the village of Sumaco, Ecuador. Student-athletes helped the village build the infrastructure needed for their village’s outhouses. 11 student-athletes joined the service trip, representing the sports of MBB, WBB, Diving, MLA, XC/Track, and WGY.
Legacy of Lowell Day of Service: Men’s Swim volunteered at Tracy Aviary and Softball and Women’s Swim/Dive volunteered at the Utah Food Bank.
Crimson Council Trunk-or-Treat: community event where all teams dressed up and handed out candy to kids prior to the WSO game. Student-athletes interacted and provided candy to over 150 kids in the community.
Holiday Dinner and Canned Food Drive:Â over 500 pounds of food collected and donated to the Utah Food Bank.
Valentine’s Dinner and Teddy Bear/Card Drive: 50 teddy bears and over 100 cards collected and donated to Primary Children’s Hospital.
Elementary School Visits: many student-athletes from different teams have visited elementary schools across the valley, including a career night at Riley Elementary.
Utah Special Olympics: Gymnastics, Volleyball and Women’s Swim/Dive volunteered to help organize and run the basketball tournament for the Olympic Games.
Utah Athlete in Service Award Recipient: Lizzy De Cecco (Swim/Dive). Presented annually by the Bennion Center to a student-athlete who has completed at least 40 hours of service within the last year.
Crimson Council Huntsman Cancer Fundraiser: planning to focus our 2023-2024 service on Huntsman Cancer Institute to create a coordinated effort throughout athletics.
Notable Teams for Community Service
Swim/Dive: clothing drive for Encircle (LGBTQ+ Youth Resource Center). Â Team has logged 531 hours, to date.
Gymnastics: volunteered with Girls on the Run, which empowers girls through sports. Team has logged 168 hours, to date.
Softball: volunteered for the Legacy of Lowell service event and participated in both the Holiday Dinner food drive and Valentine’s Dinner stuffed animal drive and card writing. Team has logged 84 hours, to date.
SPORT-BY-SPORT
 Baseball
Four Utes were named Pac-12 All-Conference, headlined by First Team honorees in left-handed pitcher Micah Ashman and first baseman Jayden Kiernan. Outfielder TJ Clarkson and right-handed pitcher Zac McCleve were named All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Kiernan posted a .402 batting average–just two points short of the Pac-12 regular season batting title–and the first .400 clip in a full season by a Utah player since 2011.
Ashman led the Pac-12 in saves for much of the regular season before finishing second in the league with nine–the most saves by a Utah pitcher since 2016. He was one of seven Pac-12 pitchers named to the Midseason Watch List for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award.
Clarkson (14) and Davis Cop (10) led Utah in home runs, marking the first season in the Pac-12 era that the team had multiple hitters with double-digit homers.
McCleve reset the program record with 107 career appearances on the mound, and finished his career ranking tied for third in program history with 12 saves.
Dakota Duffalo, Jaden Harris, Randon Hostert and Blake Whiting each were named College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District.
In April 2023, the University of Utah Board of Trustees granted contingency approval for a proposed on-campus baseball stadium. A fundraising drive is underway for the proposed stadium, which would be built on Guardsman Way at the site of the current Utah Baseball practice field, and could open as early as 2025.
Men’s Basketball
Defeated No. 4 Arizona on Dec. 1 at home, for Utah’s first victory over an AP-ranked opponent since 2019 and first under second-year head coach Craig Smith.
The last time Utah beat a team ranked as high as No. 4 was Dec. 30, 2002, defeating No. 1 Alabama.
It was Utah’s largest margin of victory over an AP Top-5 team since defeating #4 Arizona 76-51 in the 1998 Elite 8 (March 31).
Compiled a record of 17-15 overall, 10-10 in Pac-12 games.

For Venters it was her second USTFCCCA All-America Award, and the ninth in program history
Venters’ time and placement were second-highest by a Utah student-athlete at the NCAA Championships. Â
Placed second at the NCAA Mountain Regional, highest team finish in program history, to secure first ever automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Emily Venters, Simone Plourde and Keelah Barger earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors for their finishes at the NCAA Mountain Regionals. Venters paced the Women of Utah with a seventh-place finish.

NCAA Indoor Championships: Simone Plourde finished fourth in the 3,000 and Emily Venters fifth in the 5,000 — the two highest finishes ever by Utah athletes in that meet. In addition, it was Utah’s highest finish at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships (21st place)
Placed 15th overall (16 points; tied with USC), highest total and finish in program history
The Utes were tied for the second-highest finisher among Pac-12 teams with the Trojans at the championships.
Emily Venters and Simone Plourde each earned two All-America awards
Venters earned first-team honors in both the 10000m (2nd place) and 5000m (3rd place)
The last Ute to garner two first-team awards in the same championships was Jill Molen back in 1982 – the inaugural year the NCAA Championships were held on the women side.
Venters is just the third Woman of Utah to earn multiple first-team accolades in her career, joining Grayson Murphy (2017-18, steeplechase) and Molen (1982, 5k/10k).
Venters is the only Ute to have three first-team distinctions to her name between the indoor and outdoor season
Plourde earned first-team honors in the 5000m (7th place) and second-team honors in the 1500m.
Dinedye Denis was honorable mention All-America in the 400m hurdles.
Venters and Plourde are just the second pair of Utes to earn multiple All-America awards in the same championships since Molen (NCAA) and Carla Pittelkow (AIAW) did so in 1982.

Emily Venters won the Pac-12 10,000-meter title (32:32.98), becoming the first Utah runner to win a Pac-12 individual title.
Simone Plourde won the Pac-12 1,500-meter title, breaking the conference (and school) record (4:09.48), becoming Utah’s second individual to win a Pac-12 championship.

Barcos earned an invitation to the NCAA’s Morgan Hill Regional as an individual
Barcos earned his first collegiate victory at the Oregon State Invitational, finishing 4-under to collect first place.
Top team finish of the season was a tie for second place at the Bandon Dunes tournament, with Oregon State, just one stroke behind champion Oregon.

Andrei Ungur earned first-team All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the 100 back in a school-record 44.58.
Ungur became just the fourth Utah All-American in the 100 back and the first since Jim Giottonini in 1993.
Diver Luke McDivitt earned CSC Academic All-America 2nd Team
The quartet of Andrei Ungur, Jaek Horner, Ryan Garstang and Finn O'Haimhirgin earned a bronze medal in the 200 medley relay at the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships.

Volleyball
Madelyn Robinson was named honorable mention AVCA All-America, marking the seventh season in a row a Ute outside hitter has been an All-American.
KJ Burgess became Utah’s third ever AVCA Pacific South Region Freshman of the Year, and Madelyn Robinson earned All-Region honors for the second year in a row. Burgess was also on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team and Robinson earned All-Pac-12 honors for the third straight season.
Program-record four Utes earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors: Kamry Bailey, Allie Olsen, Emily Smith and Amelia Van Der Werff.
Utah Volleyball was ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll for 45 consecutive weeks (dating back to 2019), which tied a school-record for most consecutive weeks ranked set during the 2000-02 seasons.
Utah swept two top-25 opponents at home, beating #15 Washington and #24 USC at the Huntsman Center.Â
Madelyn Robinson ranked third in the Pac-12 and 12th in the nation with 4.51 kills per set, and Vanessa Ramirez was third in the conference with 4.04 digs per set.Â
KJ Burgess ranked fourth in the Pac-12Â and 37th in the nation in hitting percentage (.376), and fifth in the Pac-12 and 60th in the nation in blocks per set (1.20). She ranked in the top-five in the nation in both categories among freshmen.
Allie Olsen was fifth in the Pac-12 in hitting percentage (.363) and 51st in the nation.Â
Beach Volleyball
Utah recorded the most wins in Pac-12 play in program history after defeating Oregon twice during the season.Â
The Utes recorded their first win at the Pac-12 Championships since 2018, defeating Oregon 3-1.Â
Katie McAlister, Amaya Messier, and Kylie Pitzak led the team with 14 wins. Messier and McAlister played on court one all season, while Pitzak played primarily on court four.Â
Grace Andrews was named CSC Academic All-District, marking the first selection in program history.Â
The Utes earned notable wins over Santa Clara and Texas as well.
