Assistant alpine coach Mary Joyce enters her seventh season at Utah in 2026 and has been with the Utes for four NCAA Championship victories (2021, ’22, ’23, ‘25).
Joyce and head alpine coach JJ Johnson have helped the Utes claim four individual NCAA titles and 36 All-American honors together. Madison Hoffman won both women’s alpine races (GS and slalom) at the 2023 NCAA Championships, the first such feat for a Utah female skier since 1990. A year later, Mikkel Solbakken took home the men’s giant slalom crown at nationals on the way to earning National Men’s Alpine Skier of the Year. Most recently, freshman Johs Braathen Herland claimed the men’s giant slalom title.
Her six prior seasons have been marked by incredible collegiate and international success. Seven of her athletes qualified for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Utah won both the NCAA and RMISA championships each year from 2021-23, including an undefeated run in meets with an alpine component.
Utah’s 17th national championship all-time was won in 2025, in addition to the RMISA regular season and regional titles. Joyce’s athletes won seven alpine All-American awards, highlighted by Herland’s individual title in men’s giant slalom. Utah also finished atop the team standings at NCAAs for men’s alpine in addition to both the men’s and women’s GS races. During the regular season, the alpine team led the RMISA with 1,325.5 points.
As a whole for the season, Utah racked up 22 podium results in alpine competitions including six from Herland, the RMISA co-MVP in men’s giant slalom. Joyce coached a total of 10 All-RMISA selections on the alpine side. She also mentored Raphael Lessard, who made his first career World Cup start, and tutored the freshmen duo Tatum Grosdidier and Harry Hoffman on the way to spots at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships.
The 2024 squad picked up right where they left off in 2023, scoring the most regular season alpine points in the RMISA. Ten individual alpine race victories were claimed by the Utes and seven members of the team were named All-RMISA, headlined by Kaja Norbye’s selection as women’s slalom MVP. To cap off the season, Utah scored the most alpine points of any team at NCAAs as the program finished second in the overall team standings.
The dominating NCAAs performance that Madison Hoffman put on in 2023 capped one of the greatest comeback stories in college skiing history, a year after Hoffman missed much of ’22 due to injury. Additionally, Wilhelm Normannseth was the NCAA runner-up in men’s slalom. The Utes were the RMISA alpine points leaders during the regular season as well.
Five alpine All-American awards were won by the Utes at the 2023 NCAA Championships, including First Team performances for Hoffman (twice) and Normannseth, plus Second Team for Katie Parker and Gustav Vøllo. Normannseth (slalom) and Vøllo (giant slalom) additionally earned RMISA MVP laurels. Thirteen individual alpine victories and 27 podiums were recorded by the Utes throughout the entirety of the 2023 collegiate racing season.
Serving as host of the 2022 NCAA Championships, Utah led that title meet wire-to-wire as the Utes were the top scoring team in overall alpine competition as well as men’s giant slalom. Seven alpine All-America accolades went to the Utes including First Team to Norbye (GS), Katie Parker (GS) and Vøllo, the NCAA runner-up in both men's giant slalom and slalom. Among the RMISA accolades for the Utes was a Most Valuable Skier nod for Normannseth in men’s slalom.
The 2021 championship campaign was highlighted by six alpine All-Americans and an RMISA Championship. First Team All-American honors went to Joachim Lien in both the men’s slalom and GS, Katie Vesterstein in the women’s slalom and Vøllo in the men’s GS.
Joyce and the Utes were also in position to win it all in 2020, were it not for the NCAA Championships being canceled after two days due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Utah was leading in the team standings at the time.
Despite a championship run cut short, 2020 was nevertheless a year of accolades for the Utes. Lien was named Men’s Alpine Skier of the Year by the U.S. Collegiate Ski Coaches Association, and Lien along with fellow Ute Guro Jordheim (women’s Nordic) were tabbed RMISA Athletes of the Year.
Prior to Utah, Joyce coached three seasons at Rowmark Ski Academy as the women’s assistant alpine U19-21 coach. Several of her athletes moved on to the U.S. Ski Team and joined NCAA programs. Among the roles that she served included academic coordinator, sports psychology coordinator and assistant conditioning coach. Joyce also assisted with accounting, marketing, fundraising, travel, social media and videography.
Joyce served a coaching capacity with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard development camp at Mammoth.
Joyce skied collegiately at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont from 2013-16, competing in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA). She was a team captain in 2015. Joyce spent three years on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, including serving as chair for a 5K run to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She was also a member of the Purple Knight Leadership Academy as a senior, a program that promoted professional and personal leadership development.
