Utah alum Quinton Ganther is set to enter his third season as the Utes’ running backs coach in 2024 after joining the program in the spring of 2022.
In his two seasons at Utah, the Utes have rushed for over 200 yards in 13 games, including four games with 300+ yards on the ground.
- The Utes’ rushing offense has ranked in the top-three in the Pac-12 in 2022 and 2023, averaging 182.5 yards in 2023 and 217.6 in 2022.
- In the past two seasons, Ganther has coached four different players to 100-yard rushing games.
- He was key in the development of quarterback turned running back Ja’Quinden Jackson, who finished his career with 1,358 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns.
- In his first season at Utah in 2022, Ganther coached the Utes to the No. 11 rushing offense in the FBS, also ranking second in the Pac-12.
- The Utes produced 217.6 rushing yards per game and 3,047 yards total in 2022, the second-most rushing yards in a season in program history.
- Utah also scored 38 rushing touchdowns in 2022, breaking the school record for the second-straight year.
- He had three different running backs rush for over 500 yards in 2022 with Tavion Thomas (687 yards), Micah Bernard (533 yards) and Ja’Quinden Jackson (531 yards) all accomplishing the feat.
Ganther, who spent 2021 with the Jacksonville Jaguars as the offensive quality control coach, led the Weber State running backs room from 2013-20 as the running backs coach for the Wildcats.
- During his time in Ogden, Ganther saw the Wildcats go 45-20 in his final five seasons with the team.
- They earned three straight Big Sky titles along with four consecutive trips to the FCS Playoffs that included a trip to the semifinals in 2019.
- The Wildcats finished in the top 10 in the nation each of his last three seasons.
- Ganther coached Weber State running back Josh Davis to All-American seasons in 2018 and 2019 with Davis also being named the National Freshman of the Year in 2018. He also coached fullback Clay Moss to a first-team All-Big Sky selection in 2019.
Prior to his time at Weber State, Ganther got his start in the NFL in 2013 after earning the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Seattle Seahawks. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as a student assistant at Utah in 2012 while completing his bachelor’s degree in sociology.
Playing Career
Ganther, a seventh round NFL draft pick in 2006 by Tennessee, spent six years in the NFL. He played in 36 career games, spending time with Washington, Seattle and Buffalo in addition to Tennessee.
The two-time All-Mountain West selection played two seasons at Utah after transferring from Citrus Junior College as a JUCO All-American. He set the single-season and career rushing yards records at Citrus College, also adding the career all-purpose yards record to his accomplishments.
In 2004 for the Utes, he rushed for 654 yards and was a part of the Utah team that finished 12-0 and won the Fiesta Bowl. As a senior in 2005, he rushed for 1,120 yards and seven touchdowns with his 1,120 yards still ranking in the top 12 all-time at Utah in single-season rushing yards.
