Mike Summey begins his first season as general manager for the Utah men’s basketball team after joining head coach Craig Smith’s staff in June of 2024.
A veteran in the coaching world, Summey comes to Salt Lake City with a wealth experience at various levels. He spent the last two seasons (2022-24) at Campbell University as an assistant coach. In his first season on staff, the Camels advanced to the Big South Championship game behind all-tournament selections Jay Pal and Anthony Dell’Orso. Dell’Orso had a terrific sophomore season, averaging 21.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals while shooting .510 in conference play to earn Second-Team All-CAA honors.
Prior to that, Summey spent two years (2020-22) at his alma mater – NC State – as an assistant coach under head coach Kevin Keatts. His first season with the Wolfpack saw them advance to the NIT quarterfinals. The following season he helped freshman Terquavion Smith get named to the ACC All-Rookie Team and earn All-ACC Honorable Mention. Meanwhile, sophomore Dereon Seabron was named the ACC Most Improved Player on top of earning All-ACC Second-Team honors.
Summey spent five seasons at Bowling Green (2015-20) before returning to his alma mater and helped BGSU record back-to-back 20-plus win seasons. In 2018-19, the Falcons went 22-12 overall with a 12-6 mark in MAC play before advancing to the conference championship game. During that run, Bowling Green took down No. 18 Buffalo in the process. Summey’s last year at Bowling Green saw them go 21-10 overall with another 12-6 record in MAC play before everything was shut down due to COVID-19.
He returned to Saint Francis for a second stint from 2013-15, this time serving as the associate head coach and helped rewrite the history books. In his first season back, the Red Flash won 10 games for the first in five years as well as pick up their first NEC Tournament victory since 1996. The next season saw Saint Francis go 16-16 overall, its first time with .500 record or better in 10 years while the 16 wins were most since 1997-98.
Summey served as Miami’s director of operations from 2009-13 – including two seasons with legendary head coach Jim Larrañaga. In his final season with the Hurricane, Miami recorded its first ACC Regular-Season Championship and ACC Tournament Championship in program history while being ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Prior to his time in Coral Gables, Fla., Summey served as the head coach at Bethany College for a season (2008-09). In his lone season at the helm, Summey went 17-11 overall – which was most by any first-year head coach in program history. He also led the Bison to a second-place finish in league play with a 9-3 mark while also making an appearance in the tournament championship and earned an ECAC postseason tournament bid. That season saw Lance Beckwirth lead the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in scoring (20.0 ppg) while also taking home First-Team All-PAC honors as a freshman.
During his time at North Florida (2006-08), Summey helped the Osprey make its transition to Division I and managed all recruiting efforts. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at The Citadel from 2004-06. He also spent a season at Queens University (2003-04).
He served two seasons as a graduate manager at his alma mater (1997-99) before getting his first assistant coach job at Saint Francis (1999-2003) – his first of two stints in Loretto, Pa.
Summey graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Political Science (’97).
