BreOnna Castaneda is in her first year as a graduate assistant with the Utah Softball program after a stellar career as a student-athlete and earning her bachelor's degree in Health, Society and Policy from Utah in the spring of 2020. A three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection, Castaneda started 152 of the 164 games in which she played, batting .305 (124-407)Â with 13 home runs, 83 RBI and 74 runs scored. She closed her career in the shortened 2020 season by starting all 18 games in right field and batting a career-best .380 with 3 home runs and a slugging percentage of .680.
Castaneda started all 54 games at either shortstop or third base as a junior in 2019 after starting 49 of 50 games as a sophomore, hitting a career-high four home runs. She played in 42 games (31 starts) as a freshman in 2017.
A high school All-American and 2015 New Mexico Softball Gatorade Player of the Year, Castaneda batted .556 as a senior at Rio Rancho (N.M.) High School, where she amassed an. 874 slugging percentage while driving in 41 runs, scoring 39 and stealing 25 bases. She also helped Rio Rancho to consecutive state titles while being named all-state, all-district and All-Metro. Castaneda played her club ball for the New Mexico Sundancers.
