DJ Gasso is in his third season on the Utah staff in 2023, serving as the team's hitting coach. He joined the staff in June 2020 after spending the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma. In his two seasons on the staff the Sooners were national runners-up in 2019 and ranked No. 4 in the nation when the 2020 season was halted.
Gasso's hard work with Utah's hitters continued to bear fruit in 2022, as the team's batting average jumped 22 points to .289, compared to .267 in 2021 and the Utes also pushed across 20 more runs and increased their totals in walks, doubles and hits. Four Utah hitters were named to the All-Pac-12 squad, three achieved all-region status and Ellessa Bonstrom was named an NFCA All-American. Bonstrom accomplished this after a 2022 season in which she led the conference in sacrifice flies and ranked in the top-10 in RBI (9th), walks (4th), runs scored (5th), stolen bases (5th) and on-base percentage (6th). Â
Gasso made an immediate impact on the Utah program in his first season in 2021. The Utes hit 46 home runs, the most by a Utah team since 2012 (53), and scored 237 runs, the most since 2017. Haley Denning led the Pac-12 in hits (75) and stolen bases (31), ranking nationally fifth and tied for 11th, respectively, in those two categories. Her five triples ranked 15th in the NCAA and Ellessa Bonstrom ranked fifth in the Pac-12 in home runs in the regular season with a career-high 14.
A Norman, Okla., native, Gasso earned his bachelor’s degree in communication in 2017 from Bradley University, where he spent two seasons (2016, ’17) as a standout baseball player following one year at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan.
The infielder excelled in the classroom, earning 2016 MVC Honorable Mention Scholar-Athlete recognition, and was a two-time MVC Honor Roll and four-time Athletics Director's Honor Roll selection.Â
Gasso finished his collegiate baseball playing career at the University of Central Oklahoma in 2018, hitting .303 as a senior with a .395 on-base percentage and a .364 slugging average.
After beginning his postgraduate work at UCO, Gasso completed his master's degree in intercollegiate athletics administration at OU. A graduate of Norman North High School, Gasso is the son of Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso and the brother of Oklahoma assistant coach JT Gasso.Â
DJ and his wife Grace were married in June 2021.
