With over 30 years of coaching and recruiting in college football, Pablo Cano enters his 12th season with the Utah Football staff and is beginning his first season as the Director of NFL and Junior College Relations.
Cano started at Utah in 2012 as an assistant director of player personnel before being elevated to director of player personnel in 2016. Since joining the staff, he has been the Utes’ NFL liaison and junior college relations, officially receiving the title in 2023.
During his time as director of player personnel, Cano coordinated all recruiting logistics, including prospective student-athlete visits while also playing an integral role in current player development as well as youth and high school clinics and camps. He was key in the recruitment of several standout Utes, including Devontae Booker, Joe Williams, Kaelin Clay, Gianni Paul, Tevin Carter, Corey Butler-Byrd, Troy Williams, Armand Shyne, Tereke Lewis and Bamidele Olaseni.
Serving as Utah’s NFL liaison, Cano is responsible for coordinating scout visits throughout the year, working with alumni in the NFL and running Utah’s annual NFL Pro Day each spring. In 2022, he was voted one of the top NFL liaisons in the country by NFL scouts.
Prior to coming to Salt Lake City, Cano gained experience as a coach in six states and at five universities, four junior colleges and three high schools. He also spent time in the Pac-12 right before joining the Utes, serving as the on-site recruiting coordinator for Arizona State from 2009-11.
He was the head coach and recruiting coordinator at New Mexico Highlands from 2006-07 and was a coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas College (2006) and Lincoln University (2003-05). His junior college stints were at Pasadena City College (2008), Compton College (2002), Mt. San Antonio College (2001) and East Los Angeles College (1998-2000).
During his playing days, Cano was a defensive back at Whitworth (1986), Rio Hondo College (1989) and Cal State Hayward (1990-91) before receiving his degree in kinesiology from Cal State Los Angeles in 1999.
The native of East Los Angeles is married to the former Patricia Vasquez and he has a daughter, Paulina.
