SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Enough of the small-time competition for Utah. The Utes are ready for something big - maybe the best big man in the country.
The Utes will try to extend their five-game winning streak Wednesday when they welcome Chris Mihm and 14th-ranked Texas to the Huntsman Center.
Utah (7-2) has put together its winning streak courtesy of some soft opposition. Among the teams that have fallen to the Utes are Augusta State, Utah State, Sioux Falls and Chicago State.
None of those teams are as good as the Longhorns (6-2), and none have a player as good as Mihm, who will surely be a lottery pick if he opts to leave school after this season. The 7-foot junior is averaging 17.5 points and 11.4 rebounds.
"Mihm is very good," Utah coach Rick Majerus said. "Go down and ask the Jazz what they think of him. There's a lot of NBA guys coming Wednesday. Mihm is projected a top-five pick and the No. 1 big man in the draft. Some teams have him as the No. 1 guy in the draft."
Over 20 NBA scouts are expected to be in attendance to watch Mihm and Utah's Hanno Mottola. There haven't been that many at the Huntsman Center since Jan. 31, 1996, when Wake Forest's Tim Duncan and Keith Van Horn met as seniors. Wake Forest's 70-59 victory in that game was Utah's last home loss.
Mottola played his first game Saturday in the Utes' 84-58 rout of Chicago State. The senior forward, who missed Utah's first eight games with a partial medial collateral tear in his left knee, scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting in 20 minutes.
Texas has won two straight games since suffering its only two losses of the season. The Longhorns went to a three-guard lineup for the first time Saturday against Wofford in an 89-57 rout.
While the small lineup helped the Longhorns shoot 51.6 percent in their highest scoring game of the season, their top player was again their center. Mihm had 18 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and 22nd in his last 29 games.
Texas coach Rick Barnes will stay with the three-guard lineup, which includes Ivan Wagner, William Clay and Lawrence Williams.
"I just think we flow better right now," Barnes said following Saturday's victory. "I really do"
Texas, 1-5 at the time, surprised Utah with a 73-68 victory on Dec. 12, 1998 to even the all-time series at 3-3. Mihm had 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Mottola had 28 points and eight boards.
