SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - What a difference a big man makes.
After missing his team's first eight games recovering from preseason knee surgery, Hanno Mottola is back and already providing a sorely needed presence down low for No. 21 Utah.
The Utes (8-2) put their 42-game home winning streak on the line Tuesday night against Oregon State (7-2).
Having the 6-foot-9 Mottola back paid immediate dividends on Wednesday as his career-high 32 points, including a crucial 3-pointer late, led Utah to a 79-73 victory over No. 14 Texas.
Mottola also grabbed 10 rebounds for Utah and limited Texas 7-footer Chris Mihm to 19 points, with nine coming from the foul line.
"I had to be ready against a great team like Texas," said Mottola, who shot 12-of-21 from the field. "Mihm is a great player. He was very active in the second half and shot right over me."
Mottola made eight of his first 10 shots on a variety of inside moves and then took his game outside when Mihm guarded him in the second half.
"We played a very cerebral game," Utah coach Rick Majerus said. "We had excellent rotation and frustrated their big guys."
Utah leads the all-time series against Oregon State, 11-7, dating back to the 1939-40 season. The two last met in December of 1997 at the Rose Garden, where the Utes posted a 69-61 victory.
Oregon State, which has won five of its last six games, beat Wyoming, 83-77 last Monday.
Jason Heide and Deaundra Tanner each scored 21 points for the Beavers, while Brian Jackson added 18 points and Tanner dished out a career-high 10 assists.
Oregon State pulled away with perimeter shooting. A 3-pointer by Jackson put the Beavers ahead 56-52, and a 3-pointer by Adam Masten, followed by a hook shot from 6-foot-10 center Heide and a 3-pointer by Tanner, made it 68-57.
The Beavers will hope Heide can contain Mottola, while Tanner and Jackson lead a 3-point shooting assault. Oregon State has buried 66-of-167 (.395) 3-point attempts in nine games.
