The Utah gymnastics team received the 10th highest cumulative grade point average among the nation's gymnastics teams in 1997-98, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women (NACGC/W) has announced. Utah, which placed five individuals on the NACGC/W's Scholastic All-America team, earned an overall 3.39 GPA in 1997-98. Utah and Louisiana State were the only qualifiers to the NCAA Championships to finish in the top 10 academically. Utah placed fourth at the NCAA Championships; LSU was ninth. Individual Scholastic All-Americans for Utah included Shannon Bowles (3.91), Molly (3.79) and Sarah Northrop (3.62), Denise Jones (3.79) and Traci Sommer (3.54). Individuals needed a 3.50 to qualify. The Utah gymnasts had the highest team GPA at the University of Utah in 1998.
