SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Utah coach Rick Majerus isn't that impressed with the Utes' No. 12 ranking or the fact they're closing in on a school record for consecutive victories.
"As I was walking off the floor, fans were saying we were overrated," Majerus said Thursday night after the Utes beat San Jose State 71-49. "We get that everywhere, and I agree with them. But it's all about the scoreboard."
And Utah came out on top for the 16th straight time, two shy of the school mark, by handing San Jose State its worst home loss of the season. With a victory Saturday at Fresno State, Utah (21-4, 11-0 WAC) will clinch its seventh conference title of the '90s.
"We're an interesting team," Majerus said. "We defend and we don't usually beat ourselves. We keep grinding it out."
The team's stifling defense was a hallmark of its latest victory, holding an opponent under 50 points for the 11th time this season. It certainly got the Spartans' attention.
"They defend everywhere," San Jose State coach Phil Johnson said. "Their guard play was in our face. We couldn't get into our offense because of their guard play. Utah's got a chance against anybody in country."
Reserve Tony Harvey led Utah with 17 points. Andre Miller added 15, and Hanno Mottola had 13.
"His offense was there but I like his defense tonight," Majerus said of Harvey. "I told him, You only limit yourself.' He has tremendous athletic ability and he's really coming on. He did a good job of different things. At times, he went to the boards. At times, he got back on defense."
Harvey, who served a nine-game suspension earlier this season for violating team rules, went 7-of-8 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range to lead the Utes in scoring for the first time this season. He also had three steals and helped frustrate San Jose State's backcourt.
Will Trawick scored 14 points, and Terrance Richmond had 11 to lead San Jose State, which lost its fourth straight.
The Spartans (11-13, 4-7) lost for the third time in 12 home games. It was San Jose State's fourth straight loss to Utah, which leads the series 13-2.
Utah's backcourt of Harvey, Miller and Jeremy Killion combined for 38 points, six assists, six steals and only four turnovers. San Jose State guards had 14 points with five assists, one steal and eight turnovers.
Up by 12 at halftime, Utah scored 11 of the first 13 points of the second half, stretching its lead to 44-23. Nate Althoff's driving layup began the burst and Alex Jensen answered San Jose State's only basket in that stretch with a 3-pointer.
