SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - It was an ugly game on paper, and it only got uglier on the court.
Utah started the second half with a 21-0 run and went to an 86-38 victory over hapless San Diego State on Thursday night, the 14th-ranked Utes' 14th straight victory and the worst loss in Aztecs' history.
The Utes haven't lost since Dec. 12, while the Aztecs haven't won since Jan. 2. After halftime, a mere blowout turned into a humiliatingly one-sided affair, with even Utah's walk-ons scoring against San Diego State's starters.
"The second half was the most pitiful performance I have ever had a team play," said San Diego State coach Fred Trenkle, who is widely rumored to be out at the end of the season.
"Our poor kids are in a fog. They don't know whether I'm coming or going, and they can't play because they're not sure what's going to happen."
San Diego State's worst loss had been by 47 points to Stanford in the 1996-97 season.
Utah (19-4, 9-0 Western Athletic Conference) continued its demolition of the league's Pacific Division by walloping the last-place Aztecs. Utah has won a school-record 32 straight home games and jumped three games ahead of the pack in the division race.
"We had a solid effort in a lot of phases," Utah coach Rick Majerus said. "I feel bad for that team and that coach. That's a tough situation to be in."
If the Aztecs (2-20, 0-10) aren't at rock bottom already, they're at least within spitting distance. San Diego State has lost 10 straight games, all in the WAC, by an average of 22.4 points. Their two wins this season came against Pacific and Southern California College.
"(The Utes) are incredible," Trenkle said. "They're big, they're strong and they're physical. ... We didn't have a chance."
Utah led 38-19 at halftime and hit nine of its first 11 shots to begin the second half while San Diego State missed its first six and made five turnovers.
When Walter Small hit a 3-pointer with 14:50 left for the Aztecs' first basket of the second half, the Utah crowd gave him a standing ovation.
The Utes led 65-22 shortly thereafter, and both coaches emptied their benches midway through the second half.
Jeremy Killion was 5-of-6 from 3-point range and had 20 points for Utah, while Alex Jensen added 15 points. Tony Harvey had 12 points for the Runnin' Utes, who outrebounded the Aztecs 39-28.
The Utes, who haven't won by fewer than 10 points since their winning streak began, have a firm grip on their fifth straight conference title. With Fresno State's 73-62 loss to UTEP on Thursday, the Utes have a three-game lead over the rest of the division with five games to play.
Utah has won eight straight games and 17 of 18 against the Aztecs. Only top-ranked Duke and Murray State have longer active home winning streaks than Utah.
The Utes didn't even need the services of senior point guard Andre Miller, who finished with just four points and one assist. Miller was averaging 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in WAC play.
"It was frustrating for me to be out of the offense and just set screens instead of shoot and pass," Miller said. "But the team played great anyway, so I don't really mind."
Donte Wilson scored 10 points to lead San Diego State.
