SALT LAKE CITY - Utah hit four home runs, including three in a game two rout, to split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader with Hawai'i on Saturday afternoon at Ute Field.
The Utes took two of the three games in the series to improve to 21-10 overall and 5-4 in the WAC. Hawai'i moved to 24-18 overall and 10-8 in the league. Jenny Monson hit a three-run shot to center field in the bottom of the first inning of game two as the Utes cruised to a 9 3 win. It was her fifth long ball of the season. But before the fans could settle back into their seats, Sarah Farnworth swung at the first pitch and belted her sixth home run of the season over the fence in left center.
After Hawai'i came back with three runs in the top of the fourth, the Utes scored four more in the fifth. The big blast was a two-run homer by Lyndsey Trevis, who now has three home runs on the season. "Our big hitters really came through for us," said Ute head coach Mona Stevens, who got her 100th career win on Friday. "These two wins this weekend were not only good for our record, but also good for our hearts.
We're staring to really get it going." Farnworth improved to 12-8 with the win in the nightcap. She struck out five and gave up just three unearned runs off of seven hits in seven innings. Janelle Gonzales, chased after getting just one batter out and giving up four runs off of three hits and a walk in the first inning, took the loss to fall to 4-5.
Sunny Smith did everything she could to get the Utes a win in the first game, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI. With her team trailing 3-1, Smith hit a two-run shot well over the fence in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. However, the Rainbow Wahine came back in the top of the seventh. With two outs and pinch runner Natalie Gonzales standing at third base in place of Jennifer Tandarich, who led off the inning with a walk, Melissa McGie doubled to center to bring in Gonzales for the game winning run.
Ute starter Kristin Arbogast, who pitched with her back against the wall most of the game, left 13 Hawai'i runners on base. However, she also gave up 12 hits and four earned runs in seven innings to fall to 9-10. Kelly Gentle struck out 10 and gave up two earned runs off of five hits in seven innings to get the win and improve to 13-8. Utah hosts a three-game series against Colorado State next, beginning with a doubleheader on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
