Sommer Leads Ute Gymnasts Past Oregon State

SALT LAKE CITY--In her last home meet as a Ute, senior Traci Sommer was perfect. Sommer, a two-time balance beam All-American, scored a perfect 10.0 on the beam to lead the No. 4 Utes past No. 11 Oregon State, 195.875-190.100. She capped the evening by winning the floor exercise with a season-best 9.925.
The meet was not with adversity for the Utes, who improved their record to 7-2 with the victory. Utah's first competitor, Sarah Northrop, silenced a raucous crowd of 9,015 when she sprained both knees on her first vault. Utah was already competing without Teresa Wolf, who was out with a heel contusion. Northrop and Wolf's absence was felt on bars, too, where Utah--down to just eight healthy gymnasts--could not fill its sixth slot. While Utah was struggling with injuries, Oregon State was struggling to stay on the apparatus. Despite a season-low 48.725 on bars, Utah held a comfortable two-point lead after two events, thanks in part to five falls by OSU during that span.
But Utah helped its own cause in the final two events. Sommer's 10.0 culminated a solid 49.175 beam set for the Utes, who also got a 9.95 by freshman Shannon Bowles. On floor, the Utes were equally as good. Angelika Schatton opened the set with a career-best 9.75, and was followed by Denise Jones (9.775), Angie Leonard (9.85), Ashley Kever (9.80), Bowles (9.825) and Sommer (9.925).
Leonard, Jones and Bowles finished 1-2-3 in the all-around, with Leonard vaulting past Jones on floor. Leonard scored a 39.150 to Jones' 39.125. Bowles had a 39.10. But the star of the night was Sommer, who received standing ovations after each of her three events.
