SEATTLE - The No. 2 ranked Utah women's gymnastics team beat the 17th ranked University of Washington Huskies in a one-point squeaker 196.225 - 195.225 on Friday. The Utes improve to 4-1 one the season.
Angie Leonard led the charge on the uneven parallel bars, as the junior from Tempe won the event with a 9.900. UW's Klara Kudilkova put some heat on Leonard with a 9.850, but Ute Marilyn Ekdahl mathched her with an 9.850 of her own.
At 4-10, Traci Sommer may be the smallest member of her team, but the senior strapped the hopes and dreams of remaing perfect against the Huskies (UU is now 23-0 all-time against UW) on her back and won the balance beam with a score of 9.950.
Again, Kudilkova was there to pressure the leader, and this time it was Utah freshman Theresa Wolf that matched 9.850s with her.
With dominant wins in on the beam and bars, Utah compensated for the losses they suffered on the vault and floor competitions.
Utah take on Utah State on Friday, Feb. 27, at 7:00 p.m. in Salt Lake.
