UTAH UPDATE: The Utes are 23-23 overall and in fifth place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 7-9 record. Last week, Utah's three-game series with New Mexico at Ute field was rained out. The Utes dropped all three games in their final home series of the season to Fresno State.
Junior catcher Sunny Smith leads the team in hitting with a .323 average, and also has a team-best seven home runs and 24 RBI. Sophomore pitcher/designated player Sarah Farnworth is second on the team with a .329 average and has six home runs. Junior outfielder Jenny Monson has a team-best 25 RBI, as well as five home runs. Freshman Molly McLean leads the team with 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts. Farnworth leads the pitching staff with a 2.21 ERA and a 14-10 record. She also has a 3.4-to-1 strikeouts to walks ratio.
NEXT WEEK: The 1999 Western Athletic Conference Softball Championship Tournament takes place Thursday through Saturday (May 13-15) at Fresno State's Bulldog Diamond in Fresno, Calif. The top six teams will compete in the double elimination tournament with the winner receiving the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This is the third time the WAC has sponsored a softball tournament.
SCOUTING UNLV: The Rebels are 16-28 overall and in seventh place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 6-15 record. UNLV had last week off after dropping a three-game series at New Mexico, losing 6-1, 8-3 and 9-5.
Racheal Goodpaster leads the team in hitting with a .374 average, 14 home runs and 31 RBI. Nicole Miller is hitting .313 with five home runs and 27 RBI. Nicole Truax is the ace of the pitching staff with a 5-10 record and a 3.56 ERA. Head coach Shan McDonald has a 413-322 career record in her 13th season at UNLV.
FRESNO STATE REWIND: Utah had plenty of offense but could not keep second-ranked Fresno State from sweeping a three-game Western Athletic Conference series Saturday and Sunday at Ute Field.
Saturday, Fresno State won the opener 9-4 and took the second game 6-3. The Bulldogs broke the first game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Angela Cervantez did the majority of the damage with a three-run bomb. Utah rallied late to score two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
All-America bulldog pitcher Amanda Scott went the distance, striking out five to improve to 24-3. She also hit a solo home run in the first inning. Sarah Farnworth struck out seven in seven innings, but also gave up seven earned runs in the loss.
Fresno State had a slim 3-2 lead before getting three runs in the last two innings to win game two. The Bulldogs got two runs in the sixth and Cervantez went yard for the second time on the day with a solo shot to left center in the top of the seventh.
Kristen Hunter gave up two earned runs and struck out nine in seven innings to move to 22-5 on the season. Kristin Arbogast took the loss for the Utes, falling to 9-13. Lisa Hashimoto led the Utah offense in the doubleheader, going 4-for-8 with three runs scored. Sunny Smith also went 4-for-8 with two RBI.
In Sunday's single game, Smith hit a two-run home run and Sarah Farnworth gave up just two earned runs in seven innings, but it wasn't enough as Utah fell, 4-3. Fresno State got a run in the first inning before Smith left the yard for the seventh time this season with a shot to left field, also scoring in Amberly Johnson, in the third inning.
The Bulldogs came back with two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth. Utah pushed across a run in the sixth with Stacey Farnworth singling down the right field line to drive in Jenny Monson.
Sarah Farnworth, who gave up four runs off of eight hits, fell to 14-10 in the complete-game effort. Hunter gave up three hits and two unearned runs in three innings to improve to 23-5 with the win. Scott picked up her fourth save, striking out four in the final two innings.

HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS... is in her third season as Utah's head coach. Stevens owns an 103-62 overall record and a 48-32 mark against Western Athletic Conference teams. Stevens posted her 100th career win with a 6-5 victory over Hawai'i on April 16, reaching the 100 win plateau quicker than any coach in school history.
In her first season, Stevens led Utah to the NCAA Tournament and a third-place finish in the WAC. Last year, Stevens guided a Utah team that started seven freshmen to a 36-21 overall record and a third-place finish in the WAC at 19-13. Stevens hasn't slowed down during the off-season. Last fall, she was named head coach of the USA Softball Junior National Team that will compete in the 1999 World Games in Taipei, Taiwan, June 17-27.
The former Ute player and assistant coach came home in September of 1996 following a two-year stint at the University of Massachusetts. Stevens was the associate head coach for the Minutewomen during the 1995 and '96 seasons, and was named UMass' head coach in June of '96, three months prior to being hired by her alma mater. In each of her two seasons at UMass, Stevens helped the Minutewomen reach the NCAA Tournament and win the Atlantic-10 Conference regular-season and tournament championships.
Stevens began her coaching career as an assistant at Utah from 1981-84. In addition to her collegiate coaching portfolio, Stevens has been a nationally recognized pitching instructor over the past 14 years. She has also worked internationally, and was the owner of Mona Stevens Enterprises from 1989-99.
QUOTING STEVENS: On last week's games - "The weather was a big issue with us once again. We were ready to play New Mexico, but-as has been the case so many times this year-we tried everything but just couldn't get the games in. Mother nature had her way once again. I really feel like our kids have been ready to play most of the last month, but it's just been the same thing over and over. Playing New Mexico would have definitely helped us to get ready to play Fresno State. Still, I thought that we played Fresno State very well. We got 27 hits off of two of the best pitchers in the country. The bad thing is that we didn't win a ball game despite hitting the ball that well. I felt that we were in every game and that we played well. I thought that it was unfortunate that in the last game they got so many chinky hits against us. But, the good news is that our team felt they were close to them and could beat them; that helps us going into WAC Tournament. Sarah (Farnworth) threw a really good game on Sunday. Sunny (Smith) called that game by herself and did and excellent job. Sunny was really a gamer on Sunday, calling a great game and hitting a two-run home run. She's really coming into her own."
On this week - "We're going to give the kids a couple of days off for finals, and then get back into practicing for this weekend. We're going down to Las Vegas and UNLV is waiting for us. We need to go down there and play well and get some games in before the WAC Tournament. UNLV is a very good hitting team. They might be a little bit better hitting team than Fresno State; their hitting just doesn't have the pitching to back its up and that's why their record is the way it is. They always seem to have good talent and they always play you tough."
WAC PRE-SEASON POLL: Utah was picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference softball race this season in a poll of the league's coaches. The Utes received 52 points in the voting. Fresno State, the defending NCAA champion, was picked first with 64 points and garnered eight of the nine first-place votes. Hawai'i received the remaining first-place vote was placed second with 54 points-just two more than Utah. Colorado State was picked to finish fourth with 40 points, followed by UNLV (35), San Diego State (30), San Jose State (21), New Mexico (14) and Tulsa (14).
