Utah's appearance in the 1998 NCAA Championship game was the
first ever for a Western Athletic Conference team and the first for a
Utah team since 1944.
Utah's appearance in the 1998 "Final Four" was the first for the
Utes since 1966 and their third overall.
Rick Majerus has had 86 players on the honor roll since he has
been at Utah and last year coached a pair of GTE Academic
All-Americans in Michael Doleac and Drew Hansen.
The Utes posted a team 3.31 GPA spring quarter. It was tied for
the second-highest team GPA among the athletic teams at the University
of Utah.
The University of Utah has had consecutive first round picks in
the last two NBA drafts. Keith Van Horn was picked second in 1997
while Michael Doleac was picked 12th this last June.
Rick Majerus has led the Utes to six NCAA Tournaments in the
1990's, reaching the "Sweet Sixteen" three times, the "Elite Eight"
twice and the "Final Four" once.
Andre Miller graduated from Utah in June and became one of the
first players in the country to take advantage of the NCAA ruling
allowing non-qualifiers to gain an extra year of eligibility if they
graduate in four years.
Utah finished the season ranked 2nd in the USA Today/ESPN poll
and 7th in the Associated Press poll.
Andre Miller recorded the first triple double in an NCAA
Tournament game since Magic Johnson when he totaled 18 points, 14
rebounds and 13 assists in the Utes' West Regional Championship
victory over Arizona. Miller was named the MVP of the West Region.
Hanno Mottola was named one one of the top foreign players in
the country last year by Sports Illustrated.
Rick Majerus won his 300th game during the 1997-98 season.
Majerus has a career mark of 309-111 (.736) in 14 years of coaching.
He is the winingest Utah coach in modern times with a 210-59 (.781)
record in nine years.
The Utes finished 16th in the country in attendance last season
averaging 13,818 fans per game in the 15,000 seat Jon M. Huntsman
Center.
Utah led the country in rebound margin last season (10.0). The
Utes also finished fourth in scoring defense (57.6), sixth in won loss
percentage (30-4, .862) and field goal percentage defense (38.6) and
16th in scoring margin (12.4).
It has been estimated that Utah's run to the championship game
in the 1998 NCAA Tournament was worth $18 million to the school in
media expsoure.
